  1. These engines have been a staple in hot rods since the 50's but which one is your favorite? HRP

  2. My personal favorite is the 283, probably because I had 3 of them back in the day in a 55, and 2 57's. I've had several 350's, but never really took a liking to them because they were all in mid 70's cars when the horsepower was chocked out of them by the Federallies,.

3 ? Why 4 options. I was trying to enter 3 engines. The 265, 283 and 327. Is there some trickery here  :D

I could be crazy ,But the sound of the 327 with a cam of slight overlap on valve timing was just the best sounding Chevrolet V8 to me.

SBC 350,as Chevy's go,its a good one an I used them in my oval track cars for 40 years in a few forms,my fav. form; I used a 400 SB block with spacer mains and 327 big G crank=348. in what was basicly a 355 Chevy max class.
Now as for the other sizes,no,my Ford "Y" block's could an did well. My Dad got a brand new 1955 Chevy Nomad with new 265 V8,super cool looking car{ really loved the look of it.,but the new SBC v8 at that time was a leaking, smoking, low power pile of shit,he took it back many times, dealer worked an worked on that crappy 265,but never stopped it from leaking an smoking. After a year, dealer put a newer v8 in the wagon,283 v8=now that was a pretty good motor, still didn't have power like my Grandad's Ford 292 v8,but at lest it didn't leak an smoke.
No Chevy V8 was not great to start with, but it got a lot better,327*** and 350 ****.

30-30 Duntov lifter rattle with about a 10.5 to 11:1 squeeze is the best ever sound that ever came out of a 327 in my Humble Opinion

  13. As much as I like 283's , I would gladly take a 400 over any of them.

Any of them with simple upgrades is fine.My choice is the 327 for nostalgic reasons. When just a "yout" (movie reference)the 327 was king. The big blocks hadn't arrived on the scene. My first '55 Chevy was bone stock 283 powered and it was ok.
The next '55 had a 327 that I modified as best a 15 yr old could do with no help from the old man.It sang a sweet song with just a aluminum intake and cheap used headers. A cousin had a 327 4-speed Impala SS that he thrashed every chance he got and I rode along many miles listening to it scream through the gears.
350's are ok it's just that for the most part they were pedestrian...everybody had one.
Were I to build another engine it would be a 327. I know the 383/406/454 combo's are out there and make more horsepower but that isn't what I'm after. A crisp revving high winding 327 will give me the smiles I'm looking for.

327/350 hp. the legendary L79, destined for my 67 Nova.
Probably a bit mild by some peoples' standards but in case that doesn't impress I'll whip out my:eek:, all aluminum 427 small block Rodeck.

Love 283s, and the 301/302. But the king is the 327.

Yep, ran 'em all at one time or another. My favorite would be a 327.

Like many, I've used all of them including some not listed. The first was a pretty wild for the times 265 in the Nomad in my avatar. My favorite? easy.. L-79 that I raced in my '65 Chevelle back in the late sixties. I still have it IMG_0360.JPG

Danny, you left off my favorite, DZ 302, so I voted for my close 2nd choice the 327! I've used them all and they all have their good points.

I really like the 4bolt main 350 as they make great power as a 383 stroker motor. Especially with a 400 Scat crank setup. Next would be a hoped up 283................

  22. I had a 400 in an OT pickup with a bull-low 4 speed-dang thing seemed like it could climb trees.

  23. LOL I have run all of 'em including the big pig that wasn't mentioned. LOL
I still normally run 350s ( not stroked) but my all time favorite will always be the 283.

my kid brother could climb trees with a six cylinder chev, of course he needed several hundred yards to get up to speed. And the car was only good for one try.

My high school buddies and I built a lot of 301's in the day, so I guess it's combo 283 / 327.

I favor the buzz-saw edition sbc, the 301/302. Such sweet music...:D
Seen some 283s take some ungodly abuse when a friend was into demo's. Tuff 'lil buggers..
I recall when the L79 Deuces were knocking some of the big boys off the block. Impressive.

  27. I'm runnin' a 1958 283 in my 41 Chevy. Runs strong and sounds great! I also had one in my 66 El Camino in the early 90's until I replaced it with a built up 350.
