Once while parked in a rest stop on the Penn Pike, a guy walks up to my '46 "Woodie", puts his hand on the roof and said "I didn't know these cars were convertibles". I was once asked if the wood was plastic. The best was, one day I was just leaving a car show and had a Big Band CD from the '40s on the radio and a lady asked if I could get modern music on the radio or only music from the '40s.

 

I worked at 10,000 auto parts in San Diego back in the early 80's.
I still have a patch that says, "Don't stop till you hit 10 grand".

We were just driving age, some of the guys in Santa Clara started a new club. Plaques were cast in San Jose, every member got one. The name: "MISSION CITY RAMBLERS". Below that in smaller letters was, "Santa Clara".

Dennis ('Rod&Wheelers' on this site) had a chopped '46 Merc with Carson canvas...a 'WOW' car, and there were some '40s, a '34, etc. All had plaques.
Some mid-40s balding guy says, "Is this a club?" I: "Yes, Mission City is Santa Clara, we're all 'Ramblers'... The guy then asks, "Where are your Ramblers? Don't you drive them???" I nearly keeled over.

When my wife (who's name is Sally) stood near our car, she would get sick of people thinking it was cool that I had her name put on the valve covers, or asking if her name was Vicky!

I had a new one the other day. Someone walks up to my car and asks... "is that a crate 502?". I was with someone and we look at each other, my cohort did take the time to explain the difference between a SBC and BBC.

 

"Are your pinstripes taped on?" is always fun...

The best was a little girl asked me about the re-pop bullet tail-lights... then within minutes same kid was dragging her family over to show them, saying "Look, it has 59 rockets on the back.!" Priceless.

 

"So what did this thing start out as?" Is a question I get asked the most. It is my favorite question because I answer,"Well it started out as a 1953 Austin Somerset but of course now it is a 1953 Austin Somerset!" LOL

 

Had a guy argue with me for a few minutes, he swore my Volvo was a VW, cause it had a "V" on the center cap. Guesses ranged from Porsche - Corvette - Cobra - Opel and more.

My brother was from a small town and knew everybody . He raced a Studebaker and had a Model A also . He was at a local show once with the A and a older lady from his town that was used to seeing the Stude ask him . "wheres that Rudabega Car"

Don't think I've ever been to a cruise-in when at least one tale of street glory days involved "pulled the wheels...."

 

Was at a Mopar show and my off topic 66 satellite was entered in the stock class. Had the hood open and some asshole came up and told me that it had a built 440 in it. I have owned this car for over 35 year and know every nut and bolt on it. I told him that it was a 361 2 barrel but he insisted he knew the car and I was lying, he even went to the judges and told them my car was a modified and should not be in the stock class. Guess what, got first in my class. lol

 

Friday night, at a local cruise, someone asked if my bus ran(drivable)
guess she figured we pushed it

Assholes. dipshits, blowhards and know it alls are the best reasons not to even participate in a car show. I've been to two this year. One was the NSRA Nats in Louisville that had over 10,000 cars to look at. The other was for a local charity event that was dominated by new Corvettes, Mustangs and Dodges.

 

...In second gear, across the intersection , after side stepping the clutch, while someone was reaching for the $100 bill on the dash....
