One of the things I'm learning while doing this interior stuff is that the panels look pretty horrible until they're stretched over the backing foam. Wrinkly!
That's probably why you don't see too many in progress shots of interior work. .. you can see in the post above that I did how drastically different the pleated piece looks just by hanging.

Again, amazing!

 

Taking a break from the model a seat to quickly recover a 1948 Barber chair for a friend of mine. He has a barbershop and this chair is in the corner.
I got the seat bottom and footrest done and have a couple more small panels to go. These are small one inch top sewn pleats where you can see the seam exactly like the model a seat that I'm working on. It's neat to actually be making stuff for others. Having in!

Great choice in learning how to upholster. If I had known what I know now instead of going into the chassis business 35 years ago I would have apprenticed with a local upholster and would be doing that today. The really good creative shops in this area are far apart and many backed up for over a year.

Looks great are you using a welting foot to do the cording

 

Try making the welt as you sew it on your boxing piece. It`s easier to hide the stitch line when sewing up your seat. I also like a longer stitch length per inch.

 

I'm almost 10 years in and still learning (I am 28 and still learning, working for myself now is helping the learning curve)

I tried that on a practice piece. I can do it on the straight sections but around the curves I have trouble. Need more practice..so for now I've been making the welt separately.

HomemadeHardtop57,,,just a small hint,,Fiberflex is a much better fill
for making weltimg.
the hard plastic filler does not make corners as easily.I 've been using the fiberflex for over 50 trs.

What size thread are you using and how many stitches per inch?

 

Anytime you can add to your skills and knowledge is like putting money in the bank. You obviously have talent in that direction, stay with it.

 

Thread is 92lb bonded. I also have some 60lb. When I first started messing with this a few weeks back my stitches were very close..with the bobbin thread showing on top. I was just playing around and learning the machine. Now that I was taught how to dial the machine in the stiches are more aesthetically pleasing. On the Pfaff machine I'm using I have the stich setting on 5 or 5.5. 6 is the largest possible on the machine

Great work, getting better and better. Question regarding the motor on your Pfaff. Are you using a clutch motor or an electronic servo motor?

 

Wow! That's awesome, thanks for sharing. I knew it was a lot of work, but didn't know what all it actually took to do it!

 

No matter what thread you use. It rots on the spool as it ages. If you can break it pulling it with it wrapped around your two hand, Throw the spool away. It will only get worse.

 

You are so lucky to have some one with his skills to lead you in the right direction.....I have always wanted to learn this trade...

 

Wow, that`s some great work. I thought about taking an upholstery class. so I could do the seats in my 46 oldsmobile.

 

Got the seat back finished today. Happy for my first one.
