Maybe I should send you a set of these blinders to keep you on track;)

Wise words, Sam. It's been a couple of weeks since I've sanded on the car and I think maybe that's long enough. Walking into that room is feeling more like possibilities and less like punishment.:) Thanks for watching.

Yesterdays progress in the painting department. I started filling up the pits in the vent seal area with prime. I figured it would bond better and be easier to sand to a smooth surface so the new seal would
    work properly.
IMG_0598.JPG The next pic is what I've been sanding on.

This 40 is going to be so much nicer than what I pictured back when I subscribed to this thread long ago.

Good to see you are working on the air conditioning system Joel! That vent can be a real blessing on a hot day and can make for miserable trip in the rain if you can't get it to seal. I agree that a smooth surface will go a long way towards making for a better seal.

I bought a pair of rear fenders for the car from geoford41 here on the HAMB and they arrived today( at Fastenal store) . They are better than I had ; the left one is a lot better. I will mount them and see what I need to do. On the right side I may marry the front half of mine to the rear half of the new one. I took a couple of pix

I'm anxious to get this on the car. It appears to be almost original paint(maybe 1 color underneath). I might sandblast tomorrow.

They were shipped through Fastenal from a store location in Delaware to one near me in Indiana

I blasted my new LR fender and made a couple of small repairs . I mounted the fender so I could see what else might need to be done.

The crack in the far right pic will get welded after I can see the shape of the bottom edge.
By the way, the crappy blasting is due to the fact that I can't find dried silica sand for my blow through blaster any more. This means it is difficult to blast at lower pressure (60psig) that allows less distortion.

Thanks for the shipping info. I'll have to check them out.

I took the LR fender back off to stretch a section of the mounting flange between the last 2 bolt holes (back of fender). I'm guessing this was bolted to a car that was hit in the back and the tailpan pulled the fender into a tighter radius. There are no signs of the fender being hit directly from the back.

Heat and a port-a-power were used to stretch the fender to match the body. It's almost there ( maybe another 1/8 in). The shape of the fender at the bottom edge, as it curves around to the side, is too "fat". I haven't figured out how to do that ..yet.

I'm gaining on the fender. The fender matches the body in length now and I spent 2 or 3 hours picking at small dents and smoothing with a shrinking disk.

The dark spots are low spots, but not much. On the right is the body/fender match.

What shrinking disc do you use? One of the kits that's out there?

Here is a quick update. I'm catching up on the "new" rear fenders. The left is close and I switched to the right side rear to weld up some cracks and a couple of small patches.
    IMG_0693.JPG IMG_0690 (800x515).jpg IMG_0691 (577x714).jpg IMG_0692 (800x770).jpg
The cutout in the 2nd pic was required because a crack repair was done by brazing and it broke again. The rust through in the top pic was covered by a glob of lead on a not properly tinned surface. After I get the rear fenders in DP, I'm back to the body. BTW the delay was due to my 41 pickup. ;)

You are doing a great job salvaging those fenders Joel! They were pretty rough from what I can see in the pictures. The 41 pickup is a worth while distraction from 40 project. After all a guy has to have a truck to chase parts right?

Despite the encouraging words, I have put the rear fenders aside (all 4) and bought a pair from Carpenter. They should be here by the end of the week.

I envy your patience. I would have settled for driving with jacked fenders 50 man-hours ago.

I couldn't settle and I should have bought the repo fenders 4 months ago. The car would have paint by now, if I could have given up on the original fenders.

I got the new fenders from Carpenter early this week and called them to find out about the paint on them. I was told I could wipe it off with Laquer thinner, but I ended up with paint stripper and a razor blade. Then I finished the whole outer surface with a stripping disk . The weather is supposed to be good tomorrow and I should get the DP on them

So far they are Sam. After the DP, I'm going to test fit them.

Just wondering if you might consider selling the old fenders? I got a pass. rear on my 40 that makes a guy think it would be easier to start from scratch, lol.

Stripped the new fenders and sprayed DP on them. Tomorrow I'll try to fit them. IMG_0731 (800x483).jpg IMG_0732 (800x496).jpg IMG_0733 (800x520).jpg

I put the new fender on the passenger side and it looks good. Maybe it's my rose colored glasses, but I'm excited about the fit. I'll put the other one on after supper and if it fits as well, I'm going to apply K38 to both and start blocking. IMG_0747 (800x599).jpg IMG_0748 (531x800).jpg
I also checked the tail light for fit to the contour... perfect.
