  9. On a roll! Camped there MANY times, back when you could just drive in and look for a spot! Before making reservations a year in advance!

Things weren't as primitive in the 50's as you think.

Art Laboe was a So Cal /LA icon. This photo was the Los Angeles Orpheum Theater. 1950's

    Hello,
As cool as So Cal gets all year around with the ocean breezes, it does get hot in the summer. In those post war tract houses, the windows were steel crank out units and hard to mount a window air conditioner. But, my dad got a window unit and said for my brother and I to adapt it to a huge glass sliding door in our "den." We laughed, but he said we could do what it took to make it work for our mom.

So, the easiest way was to get an aluminum framed safety glass unit made and fit into the sliding patio door channels on the side and top. Then, it was a matter of securing the inside bottom edge that sat on top of the A/C. The A/C unit was secured to the bottom track with "L" braces. The adjoining seams had clear tape for total sealing, to keep the "cool" inside.

Since the patio had a permanent shade cover, rain or bad weather did not get to the A/C unit. The A/C unit was easy to install in the summer and easy to put away in the Rumpus Room (our 2nd hot rod garage) for the rest of the year.

Hot Rod ingenuity for our Long Beach home. After working on our cars, we sat in front of the A/C unit for the rest of the afternoon. My mother was so happy that she gave us enough money to get a set of Bruce Slicks for the 58 Chevy Impala.

Over weight Impala hasn't got a chance with those dummy spots slowing down the air flow...
