That deuce tudor, top right on the August '63 Car Craft just sold at auction for 21,000. Looks like a bargain for a car that was on at least two covers. I wish I'd been there to bid.

    Hop Up 1952
... I think we should include 30-31 Fenderless Roadsters with Deuce Grille Shells. From a distance and front-on shots they look pretty close and when they have a Deuce Frame they even get closer.

    Hey RD,
Here is an ALMOST cover story for a fabulous 32 Phaeton from back in the day...

    upload_2017-7-17_17-7-18.png

Does almost count? On this cold brisk morning in Pomona, we set up this fabulous 32 Ford Phaeton for a photo shoot. The winter storms had cleared out and the sunny skies made the local mountains stick out like a painting. Yes, it was cold there, with the winds coming off of those snow capped mountains, just 10 miles away.

Tripods and low ground supported shots were mandatory as there was a slight shivering (me) when holding the large cameras and even the 35 mm SLR. (focus and shutter adjustments don't work well with gloves, even thin Isotoner gloves or those thin leather gloves.)

In a preview discussion with some editors, they knew of this build and wanted a great location and color. When the final shots were taken, the film developed and the story written, the discussion followed at the publishers offices. “…Where is the color for the cover shot?” What???

Blue, So Cal skies, white snow capped mountains, traditional look but a mixture of So Cal hot rodding at the time, super red interior and a two tone paint…but where is the color? Whaaaat? As the story goes, by an inside source, the cover was already picked by the head guy. My story was just icing on the cake for the lead feature of car displays inside of the mag.

There is even a yellow street sign on location…for cripes sake..ha! In looking at the actual July cover, where was the creativity? (roll it up against a red barn in the neighborhood and take a photo)Where was the contrast in design, composition, or real color that stands out as a photograph. The Pomona locals knew exactly where to go for my outstanding photo shoot. But, as magazine politics go, the guy in charge had the last say.

It was less expensive to give me the first inside color page and story byline, than to pay me for the actual cover and story. Despite the better color photograph and story, that red RPU still got the cover. At least another non staff, contributing photographer got the credits and money. In the world of magazine business politics and finances, every penny saved, counts.

With the number of monthly and bi- monthly issues, along with annuals, quarterly's and one shots that featured '32's why do you feel that is necessary?
Why not just start a new thread for Model A's with '32 grilles and/or Deuce rails.

I have been messing around on the computer and doing a number of 'phantom covers'. Here's a few recent ones.

Same car? No way, the one on the Hot Rod cover is a extremely well engineered show piece and it is a '28-'29 Model A on a full tube chassis.
The one on the Soup cover is a '32 and while not a bad car it sure isn't the caliber of the other one.
First one looks to be running a baby hemi (DeSoto?) with stack injection and the Deuce has a Chrysler with six carbs.
There are quite a number of other differences in them too.
