Technical Brownish - Red Metallic paint?

I'm trying to find a metallic paint like this one in the pictures. This is a brownish-red/redish-brown metallic. The owner said it might be a paint from the 1950's or 60's since the metallic is very subtle.

This color sometimes photographs as red but it's more of a brown color. I know it's not easy to go off of pictures but the color looks sort of consistent in these pictures taken in bright daylight. If someone can point me in a direction of a color(s) that would be great.

Most Maroon paint will default to brown under different lighting. If you can find someone who understands paint chemistry they will be able to point you in the right direction. Probably has to do with a particular mixing tint

 

I had a 1970 Duster 340 with a similar color "Burnt Orange Iridescent Metallic" was the Chrysler paint color name if I recall....

Not my Duster,mine seemed a little darker, but here is the color

Look at paint chips from the late 60's to mid 70's...... those colors were popular then. Mopar used a couple as said.
Also most paint suppliers have chip books that run the spectrum of colors.
Let us know what you end up with.

 

maybe 62 GM honduras maroon, a shop here painted an orig 40 Willys gasser/coupe that color without the metallic-looks fantastic.

 

Have a 62 Fairlane with a very similar color. Always called it Turkey S$%t brown.

 

Is there a chip for that?

Check out Matador Red metallic, it's a 64 Caddy color. You suppose by chance it could be a factory color on that ambulance?
BTW, I looked it up on TCP Global's auto color library.

 

A good paint store can may have a meter to come up with the right mix... or you can compare paint chips!

Look a Autobody tool mart . They have a bourbon brown pearl.

 

I'm thinking 1960 VW Cardinal Red Metallic.

 

Love that color. I tend to think of it as "copper-bronze"...looks similar to Chrysler Turbine Bronze poly:

 

Cordovan is another red-brown name from earlier times. I'd consider it an earlier name for root beer.

 

77 Jeep YJ had a similar colour, Autumn Red. Sorry no good photos that show the color.

As mentioned, check the colour chip books, it might be close.

On line sources of colour chips are not a good reference for color.

1971 full size Chevrolet (and possibly other GM cars) had a color very similar to your pic. At least as it appears here on a PC monitor.......not necessarily a very accurate depiction.

The Original VW Color Combination for Cardinal Red Metallic is:

19 Parts 90 Aluminium

54 Parts 55 Wine Red

25 Parts 53 Orange

02 Parts 40 Black

It seems that the orange mixed with the wine red gives the color a sort of orangish-brown tint. This color is starting to look good to me. I'll have to go to a paint shop and look at color chips, especially the VW Cardinal Red.

The 1964 Ford Vintage Burgundy looks a bit too maroon. The car in the pictures in the 1st post haas more of an orangish-brown tint.

 

Maybe 1970 Chrysler Med Burnt Orange? LT Burnt orange?

Maroons ('darkish reds') are difficult, some of the hardest I've ever tried to blend.
I built a 'serious' Revell-Monogram '39 Ford sedan, primered it white; didn't want any 'red oxide dark underlayment' compromising my 'final mix'!
I mixed 'til it looked just right...tried it out on another white primered body I had. Nope! Too light...add black, stir...
Very long story, as I added throughout the evening, my 4 oz. of paint turned into a quart...and when I knew I had it, I laid it on.
Next morning I looked at it, damn near chocolate. Grrrr!
While fooling around idly, I also discovered that the 'red oxide' primer we all used when covered with clear...made the most Stunning maroon I ever saw!
Live and learn...

 

The Chrysler Lt. and Medium Burnt Orange colors might be a bit too brown. I think it needs a bit more red.

 

Mike, You build models too? That's cool. I'm actually using the paint for a model of the ambulance I posted above. I combined a Polar Lights Ecto-1 1959 Cadillac ambulance(white plastic) with a Jo-Han 1964 Cadillac Deville(blue plastic) to make a 1964 Cadillac ambulance. I scratch built the hi-top.

This 1964 Cadillac ambulance appeared in the opening of the pilot episode of a 1985 short lived TV show called, Misfits Of Science.

You can spend all day on the chip books at the paint store. I leave more confused than when I started.

I can tell ya brown is much less expensive than red, if you start custom mixing keep that in mind.
