I've been trying to figure out what I want to do for an engine in my Pontiac. I've been mulling over a 389, but the only ones in my area are post 1960 for some reason. If I used a water pump from my old engine (the mounts are built into the water pump\timing cover), motor mounts shouldn't be an issue. the deciding factor is weather the hydromatic will bolt up. Does anybody know?
If memory serves correctly, 64 down should work perfectly. Trans should bolt up to. 65 is when all the changes came about as far as trans bolt pattern. If yours has the original v8 in it I believe you can even use the front timing cover, water pump etc off the old engine. But you have to use it as a complete assembly. That way you don't run into bolt pattern differences on the water pump etc.
There have been discussions on here about this swap before. I seem to remember something about coolant passages being different, but that may be intake manifold related.
55-60 will bolt together for the most part. 61-64 will interchange. 65-79. That's the general rule. There are other small differences but that should get you close Now if you buy one of the trans adapters that opens up a lot of options. But... It cost a lot of money too. That link above will explain better what I was trying to say. Sent from my VS990 using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
The hydro will only bolt to a 59-60 389 unless you can find an old B&M type adpter. I have a 57 Chieftain and I am replacing the 347 with a 59, 389 stroker motor. It will be 453 inches and be backed with an old B&M hydro.
