Pinto motor was always the hot ticket for these cars. Been plenty of info in the british car mags over the years. A 1600 crossflow motor should work too. I had a drum braked '67 Anglia, and 105E discs and struts were a bolt-in swap. Might be hard to find these days though.

  2. I like that, seems like I'm becoming the Pinto (2.0 EOA) guy around here. I've got a spare motor and A/T, it's a project for my girlfriend. I was wanting it to be kinda modern under the skin for the ease of finding parts, low maintenance and daily driver/distance trip driver possibilities for her as her only car.

I know this is an old thread, but did you ever successfully do this?

Thinking about a 100e and getting a modern 4 or 6 in there. Want it to be a daily.

    Any thoughts?

don't know if you saw the original car I was going to use but here is another one I picked up on . runs and drives but only does 40MPH so I will use My Squire for the mock up and when I get it going ill do a weekend swap into this Escort.

  6. Yeah, but they're not cheap. I had a couple of these in the late 60s, and everything had to be special ordered if it was even available. My '58 Anglia had poured babbit rod bearings; there was a conventional 'conversion' bearing available, but the required machine work to the rods pushed the price to over $200 for just the rod bearings. Keep in mind that in those days a complete rebuilt 283 long block could be had for $350. Add in main bearings, pistons and rings, head gasket (the only one available) and you were over $400 just in parts....

And they weren't bulletproof... one trip to the drags with mine killed three of the top rings and two of the seconds. It still ran, but oil consumption was fearful (about 15 miles per quart!). I got a 'pollution' ticket (in 1967!) with it due to the fact it would lay down such a cloud that you couldn't see across an intersection for several minutes after I went through... LOL.

I ended up buying a clapped-out '56 for the decent-running motor. I decided to touch-up the valves, had to take it to a lawnmower shop as none of the automotive shops could do the seats.

As said before in replies......if going 4, it needs to be small and light. The Ford Zetec is a good choice, lots of 100E's over here that have been done with Zetec's, and there are rwd conversion bits available, and they sound and go well with ITB's on.
Physically bigger, older cast-iron 4 bangers like Pinto's etc are a lot of weight in one of these, and/or need to be set back way into the firewall. A compact, light all-alloy V6's would be my choice......or bike engine......V4 Honda out of a Pan Euro etc maybe..?

The Saab V-4 is a slick little engine that would easily fit.

Do this and it will be a lot more fun than a 4 cylinder. Still got 25 mpg. My morris minor DSCF0938.JPG

    Keep me posted!

Just saw Honda will be selling their Civic R engines and think that would be pretty awesome. Wonder about sizing and matching up, but talk about power AND reliability.
