  1. I'm avoiding painting anything this summer!! Currently working on getting the 57 drivable, the shiny stuff can come later.

Decided to take a couple of days off while it's 30C :D
Sitting in the shade with a cold beverage beats sanding any day :D

Then the powder coating shop called to say my gas tank was done.
Wimbledon white and it came out very nice.
I'll polish the stainless steel straps that hold it down

Been thinking about that. It's pressure treated wood that is in good condition still.

  7. When I was an apprentice Panelbeater too many years ago, I had a good friend who managed the paintshop the company I worked for used. I would often go in the evening and help Jeff with paint preparation to help speed up the turn around time which meant sometimes I would be preparing a car that I had just " finished " the body work on. Man oh man, did I ever learn the difference between a bodyman's finish and a auto painters finish which I feel made me a better bodyman, but, hey, that was many many years ago.

Since I am neither a bodyman or a painter, I'm not sure what my results will be.
I'm trying to get it prepared but who knows what my best attempts will give me.
    Any hints for a novice ? :)

Yes, hire it done! Just kidding of course. We are in the middle of primer and bondo stuff on the 54 Merc.. I will probably never complain about the price of a quality paint job again. This stuff is tedious.....and I thought I was a patient man....

    Tank looks great!

Thanks, I'm complaining and the body of my T is tiny in comparison.
I can't imagine doing a big car.
I only hope that any flaws I might miss won't be too glaringly obvious :D

This is your chance to do it right. You don't want folks to think you wasted all that beautiful chrome on a Rat Rod.

  14. Judging by how meticulous you have been with the rest of the build I think you will be just fine! As said above, patience is key and when you think you are done blocking, block some more!!

  15. Are you using a guide coat Larry? That's the only way to really know if you have it flat. I can get you some high build primer to use if you don't have any that will really help get things flat when you get it close.

I'm going to dust it with a little black lacquer that I have in a spray can.
    Thinking that will work.
I don't have high build primer just that pro form epoxy.
Is that high build primer like a spray on filler?
    Compatible with what I'm using?
That might make things easier thanks.

  17. Yeah it is like a spray on filler just spray a couple of coats, guide coat it and block it smooth. It makes getting your body work straight a lot easier than try to chase little imperfections with filler. And yes compatible with what you are using. Are you around next week? I could drop some off and maybe get to see the truck in real life.:)

1.JPG I also highly recommend HOK Primer, surfacer, sealer. It comes in various colors so you can match to your top coat. I also used a contrasting color as a guide coat.

I'm doing so believe me one is coming over early this week to bring me some high build primer /filler that will help.
I dusted one side of the body today with black laquer as a guide coat and blocked it smooth and flat.
I have to say it's encouraging as it seems to be getting very nice.
    Lots of sweat :D

FYI the only thing modern pressure treating does is protect wood from some bugs , that's all , sun rot [dryING OUT ] is woods biggest enemy....

Looking at a product called Cutek which is an oil with a stain tint that is absorbed into the wood. Regular stain just peels off anyway.

    Available here locally.

Back to my project, if it cools down a little bit I'll block some more later ,if not then bright and early tomorrow morning when the front of my garage is in the shade and the morning air is cool.

  26. Hi Larry, sorry it has taken awhile for me to get back to you but I believe you have already been given the best advice, patience and work slowly so not go through to far. The guide coat is absolutely critical in the finish too plus the use of an excellent high build spray on filler primer, but one that seals too. I would only use that once I am happy with the blocking. As already mentioned, you have set such high standards for us following along, I have confidence in your ability to end up with an outstanding finish anybody would be proud of.

Well, a big thanks to K13
He came over to take a look and brought me some high build primer/surfacer.
I finished blocking the body and doors so they are ready for a couple coats of high build and then a final blocking

Color will come when we get a few cooler days in fact the high build primer may have to wait for that too :D

In the meantime I can work on the minimal prep that the pickup bed needs.
    Always something to do :D

In my youth, I worked in the office of a paint & body shop. Every once in a while, I'd wander into the work area and check things out. All, I can say is, I'll never do it. It's not the constant haze of dust in the air, which requires a mask of some sort, it's the damn TIME involved.

You're doing great Blue. Better you than me.:)
