Well, the 350 tri-power want tu. #8 plug would oil foul out in 40 miles with #7 trying catch up. I.E. Major TLC and a rebuild needed. Was gonna bite the bullet and rebuild until a buddy offered a 383 short block w/o a cam and only about 50 miles on it for almost a song!!!! Had a SCAT crank and rods, TRW pistons, 4 bolt mains, ARP throughout, and balanced to boot! Can you spell "break your arm getting the checkbook out?" Took the L79 cam out of the 350 and stuck it in the 383 with some performer rpm heads. Unfortunately, the wonderful Offy intake will not fit the ports in the heads so my wonderful 6 pack won't work. Now I'm waiting on an Edelbrock dual quad setup to get here. but here's what it looks like so far. Getting excited to drive it and see what it might turn in the 1/4.

why run a used cam/lifters? new motor sounds too good to risk anything on

  3. The ports don't fit?

    I would always run 2 x 4's rather than tri-power. Tri-power for customs, 2 x 4's for hot rods.

The Comp Cam and lifters have less than 500 miles on them, i.e. basically new.....no trace of scuffing or wear whatsoever and we made sure each lifter went back on the correct lobe.

Nope. The intake ports on the heads measure a hair over 2" and the ports on the Offenhauser intake measure 1.7? Slightly diff widths too. Even Edelbrock tech support said no joy on the Offy intake.

Not if there isn't enough room in the casting to open up the intake to what is necessary..

  9. Use the intake. You choke it a bit. It will have better bottom end.

Then I'll have a reversed funnel effect and choked down more than a little bit Chopped 51. The engine cam and heads are designed to respond best between 1900-6200 rpm. My cruise rpm will be about 2300 with the 4.11 gears.

Finally got the coupe back on the road again. Geez that stroker is torquey.....goes like stink too. Almost scared myself last night as I wasn't expecting the quick response....makes the 350 and deuces seem like a VW!!! Should have done this a long time ago. The Edelbrock heads and dual quads work flawlessly....no hesitation, stumble, or pause of any type.....just awesome head snapping response. Merging onto the on ramp, crack the secondaries and the torque shoves you back in the seat. Haven't had the nerve to try WOT yet.. Think I should get more used to it first. Life is grand!! Here's a pic of the final engine.

If there is only 50 miles on it, and the cam is removed sounds as if a cam lobe was wiped out. Might be good to make sure it does not have any metal in the oil galleries or you will be taking it apart again.

Cam and lobes were perfect and all lifters went back on same lobe. Regardless we already plan to change the oil and cut and spread the filter next week. Can never have too much caution with a fresh engine. Thanks for the reminder.

As you take care to put the lifters back with the same lobe they were running on it works fine. Mix them up and you are in for trouble.

I know he would have loved to use the 3 deuce manifold, but I bet the problems were not on the inside of the ports matching but on the outside. Lippy

dual 4's, 411 gears and 383. 15 gallon tank. Looks like frequent fuel stops, but should be a lot of fun.

I think he was speculating that the engine you got that didn't have a cam, had a cam problem before you got it.

It was both inside and outside. New and modern tech vs old tech. The dual quad air gap intake matches inside and outside.

Could be. Truth is money got short with all that we were doing to the car and a roller cam was too spendy. Had the L79 flat tappet and lifters with only 500 miles on it in pristine condition, why not use it? :)
