Since I became a Hamber in 2009, I fell in love with Model A's. I'd also always been intrigued with flathead v8, but did'nt know much about them. The Hamb community taught me a lot about both.
After having several different projects, I decided it was time to start collecting parts to build a Model A. I've since bought and sold two model A's, one two door sedan and a coupster project. Neither quite filled the spot.
Then last July I ran across a CL ad for a wrecked 1930 Model A five window coupe in Arkansas. It had a crate 350 and 5 speed transmission, jake and Pete,s frame, disk brakes.
The price was within budget and it was close enough to get in one day.
I called the owner and he informed me that he had a lot of people interested, so I had to hurry. Called the bank and told the wife, both approved!

The car belonged to John known as Scoggman on here. He has a build thread of it on here. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/one-for-daddy-0-model-a-coupe-build.561557/
And a few months prior John and a couple of his buddies had been involved in a terrible collision with a drunk driver in the coupe. John got the worst of it, he got thrown from car and had a bad head injury.
John and I made a deal, now I'm the proud owner of a smashed 30 coupe

She will be reborn from the ashes like a Phoenix,
So this going to be my (re)build thread

I really like IMG_7436.JPG IMG_7434.JPG IMG_7434.JPG IMG_7546.JPG IMG_7550.JPG the hanging pedals setup. I may keep it that way.

First thing is to pull body and see how extensive the damage is.

John is doing well. He has had a long road to recovery, but he is good. I actually just spoke to him earlier this evening.

I decided to sell off the complete chassis, powertrain and all. More damage to the frame than I wanted to mess with. And I really have my heart set on building a AV8.
So the chassis sold to a fellow Hamber, Bartmcneill

Built a wooden frame on caster to make moving body around a breeze.

I've already got a pristine A frame sandblasted and waiting to be boxed.
If funds weren't an issue, 32 frame would be the ticket! Maybe next time

Good that previous owner is doing OK - hope that you will adding more safety into build - nothing like one of those "cheap & quick builds"

Ya, safety will be important factor in this car. Maybe a discrete roll bar, safety belts and sturdy door latches.

  22. I never liked hanging pedals. How do you put brake fluid in those when the car is finished? I'd put the pedals under the floor. Looks like you've got a good start on it though.

  23. Good to know that the previous owner is doing well. I love that you're putting the car back together, safe journey on the build sir.

Coming along nicely. Could I suggest a beefy Dagel 'K' member on the new frame. IMHO you won't regret it.

After sitting idle in my garage for over 4 months, I finally had some free time to mess with the car. Removed the separating wall that previous owner had built between the cab and trunk. I am trying to figure out a good effective way to get the kink out of the body.

The accident caused the body to bulge right below the rear side windows on both sides. The body measures 54" side to side were it bulges. Compared to measurements from other A models that is 2 inches too wide!!! So a friend suggested I sit the body on my A frame and take some measurements, since the frame is true.

Wow, that little coupe really got stuffed and puffed. Metal has to go somewhere in a collision, to get those quarters straight you need to figure out how to put the metal back where it belongs. Is the roof still straight? Door opening enlarged? Floor pan buckled? Heck of an impact, glad everyone is ok.

The cowl change is the way to go. You have a good starting point, Straight frame and straight cowl and you have a straight car.

I wonder if you freed up the front and lower parts of the quarter panel skins back to the wheel wells if they would pop forward back to where it was previously. This would at least take the stress off them that is causing the bulge and might give you an approximation as to where the door frame has to come back to? Just a thought...
