Went to the show in Iowa today. Overwhelming number of cars and I probably only saw half.

Great show! Made the drive Friday and Saturday. I don't think the fairgrounds could handle too many more, it was packed.

It was great. I wish I would have had more time. I kept walking and finding new areas, then more, and more. Like I said, I know I didn't see 1/2 of what was there.

I took my wife and 3 kids. We spent 6 hours there and didn't see half of the cars. 20170701_144854_HDR_Film4.jpg 20170701_152211_HDR_Film4.jpg 20170701_130048_HDR_Film4.jpg

Maybe if three or four of us share pics, we'll all see them all! Thanks for the pics!

    Thanks for sharing the pictures.

I have a friend who is at the show and called me Saturday at 9:30am to let me know that Goodguys had announced that the fairgrounds was completely full and that they would not be taking any additional vehicles.

That placed must have been packed with hot rods!

I saw a few cars going the other direction when I was headed to the show. I was wondering if maybe they got turned away or something. Wonder what the car total was?

Yep as of next year all Good guys shows are going to be 1987 and older. Des Moines doesn't need more cars, but most all the other Good Guy events are low in entries .Des Moines is one of the biggest if not the largest. It's all about the money. This was my last year as I will not pay to see 1987 cars.

Time to open the years up now to keep the sport and show alive. There aren't many 20-30 somethings who want or can afford pre-49 cars. I was at the show and think I saw a ratio of 20 hot rods for every motorized scooter driving on the grounds. The average age of hot rodders isn't going down. My kids will always appreciate "traditional hot rods" but they are certainly in the minority. Please no imports though. Just my opinion.

If the fairgrounds is already full Gasser57, why do you think we need to add more late models?

I don't care if they open up the other shows to late models, but I think 1972 is late enough for us in the Midwest. We don't need the Buick GNs or Trans Ams.

The late models can come Sunday. A good amount of cars showed up Sunday. The most for a long time. Saturdays count was about 4200.

Because there was plenty of room on the fairgrounds. I was there and have only missed two years for deployments. People just didn't want to look for places to park. Judging by the age of the participants it's only a matter of time before space is not an issue. I'm in my early 40s, love the show, and love hot rods, but the reality is we have to open things up to a newer generation. My Dad and most of his friends are pushing 80. If they don't build the interest for younger kids now, then we all might as well sell our iron to museums because no one will want them. Selfishly, I'm hoping to latch on to a really nice and super cheap 40-41 Willys in my lifetime because the younger generation won't want them, won't appreciate their history, and frankly could care less about fat fenders cars.

This was the highest number we saw. Of course this doesn't account for people who register and don't bring their car. It was on a nicely done 69 Camaro by the IA Tourism Building on Saturday afternoon. Anyone see anything higher?

I disagree completely. It is all about the money. As last week there were and consitantly each year about 12,000 PRE 1964 cars at Back to the 50's in St Paul MN. This proves that in Des Moines (midwest area) we do not need to go to the 1987 model year .Maybe in the west coast they do. Keep the plastic cars out! They already have their Sunday for the off the sales floor cars.

we was there -the problem was -there was no way to get out !!! if you was about anywhere -you had to make a cruise around the fairgrounds !!!! a time of about 25-45 minutes !!! this added to the mass confusion !!!!!!!!! there was a inner gate by where you registered BUT closed about all week -end .there was a gate about a block east of trere that was a exit BUT security would not let you turn south there -about a short block from that gate - they made you turn left a short distance to turn again east -between 2 of the pig barns -into a narrow -1 lane street -with cars headed east & west -what IDIOT planned this ? i finally got thru that mess & turned south -past the pig barn and got to the "south " exit gate !!! either goodguys or the fairgrounds need there head out of there asses -if there was a major problem that would happed there -big problems there would be !!!!!!!!!!!! plus good guys needs to get there shirt trailers of the parking ------so cars can park there -BUT id say the mass construction there -created a lot of these problems & the fair & good guys have no idea how to deal with it !!!!!!!!!! write a letter or e-mail the iowa state fair or good guys a complaint !! it might help for next year??

Thus year they had a couple of extra gates opened on the south side that we were able to breeze in and out of. Next time drive east towards the windmill and turn north at the tip of the hill. It is a much more efficient way to leave the grounds.

I'm fairly certain Goodguys is not a not for profit organization. No money, no show. You probably don't go to work for free either, so what's the difference? Expanding the market results in increased odds of no future shows. The DSM Fairgrounds cannot handle what MN can in terms of car volume, but there is certainly room for some expansion of years. If MN gets 12K pre-64 cars annually, then why does DSM usually hover around 3,500 - 4,000 annually which includes later models and the Super Sunday that allows new American cars? If your concerns are true, then DSM should have burst at the seams a long time ago.

I'm all for keeping the hobby alive but I'm afraid they may inadvertently hurt their own events in the process. A 15 year jump to '87 is pretty significant and a much different set of cars than those that are pre '72. If the majority of the event entries are in that range it's a turn off those like me that travels 6 hours to attend. The juice may not be worth the squeeze...

This was probably my favorite car there.
