In the recesses of my brain, I saw this car at Green Valley Dragway when I was six or seven. I know this is no help, as that would have been about 1974 and you've narrowed it to an earlier period. I walked the pits and collected the badass 8 x 10 glossies that the racers handed out in that era. Wish I knew where they ended up, my brothers have no clue what happened to my stuff when I went to college.

  4. Roger @riceman Lee thinks it's the (Lou) Baney - (Vince) Rossi Top Fueler ... before the Yeakel Plymouth Woody car.

  9. This nighttime photo of the "RAPP ROSSO & MALDONADO" car looks more PINK than PURPLE:

All their cars were Purple, never pink. They called themselves The Purple Gang. A well known team at the time.

Ed Pinks old car with Don Long frame. Short wheelbase with similar front wing (Different mounting) and roll cage (3 point) but without the sheet metal on the nose. Injector scoop is the same as are the wire wheels however the headers are different as is the steering drag link.

The Pink car was restored by Pete Eastwood and originally built in 1964. It competed in the 1965 NHRA Top Fuel class winning in it's first time on the track at the 65 Winter Nationals. Could it have been modified from original at some point in time to current configuration?

That is a Long car (with very well documented history through several iterations), the one in the photo looks more like a Fuller.

Talked to Don Preito, and he thinks it's the Dean & Duggan car and he might have pics in his arcives. Dick Dean built bodies for many racers and Duggan had a muffler shop and built headers for many racers

Looking on WDIFL, it does look like the Akins and Dugan car on Diggers pages 103 and 214. Thanks, Chase

    Ah...no

"Her willingness to buck the system would change the sport forever in 1965, as she was successfully licensed that year to compete in the supercharged gasoline dragster category by drag racing’s largest organization the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA). The upper Gas divisions were professional categories, and no other women had ever been permitted this qualification up to that time. She proved it was no passing thing by match racing (exhibitions for a guaranteed fee) throughout the East and Midwest for the next four years, as well as making selected national event appearances on both NHRA and rival AHRA (American Hot Rod Association) sanctioning bodies."

Sure looks like it to me. Steering linkage is in the right place, roll bar is silver, and the body line just below the drivers compartment on the cowling is in the same place.

  30. Ah...no..Shirly was not driving a fuel dragster in California in 62-64 which is the look of the car in the first pic.Very short, weed sweepers, etc.
I think the mystery has now been solved by the above!
