I need to fix the fuel pump on the '58 Chevy, but when I look at pictures of what is offered up as a fuel pump for a '58-'62 235 six, they look nothing alike (bottom pic). This is the pump that came with the car, but it looks like the '52-'57 version. Is there really a difference as far as interchangeability? I have not looked to see what the casting numbers are on the block to really proof the year, but it does have an 848 head. The 1958 shop manual seems to show the same pump as I have, but all the parts houses show as '52-'57, now I'm confused. :-\

the pump in the shop manual pictures is the dual type, which has a vacuum pump side, to run the vacuum windshield wipers. There is also a single type, which you seem to have.

    they do interchange

Good, I figured as much since I could not locate one for the vacuum wipers, horrid things. Thanks squirrel.

If you have electric wipers, then the single action pump is good.

I have vacuum wipers, but is it worth it to try and restore them? I don't know, kind of riding the fence on that.

you could get an original 58 electric motor, they came in V8 cars. They're kind of flaky....you might also see if New Port Engineering makes a conversion for it, they are a bit better quality. but you need to deal with their stupid switch that doesn't look right....

I know right? Looks like a surplus Volkswagen switch.

I've managed to adapt the original knob, it takes a little effort.

My '54 Bel Air 2dr. had the factory vacuum wipers, I was told that a '57 12v wiper motor would work, $60.00 and it did... A direct bolt on, 2-speed and all. Dyno Dave

Thanks Dave, that sounds like an excellent topic for a tech thread (hint, hint) ;)

I wonder what the vacuum wiper set up in the 58 looks like? The 58 electric motor is quite different from the 57, but the 57 electric motor might fit, if you already have the vacuum setup, and leave all that stuff there that it attaches to.

I used a Newport electric on my 60 with a 235 engine. Works great.

We have not cracked into that, but I don't have a picture handy of a six-cylinder car's firewall. IIRC there is a panel that unbolts and has two hoses running out from it. I'll have the boy send me a picture. Anyway, here is what a V8 car's firewall looks like.

I'm familiar with electric wiper motor, it has a built in plate that fills a hole in the firewall.
