He took this car on one of the Americruises in the early 90`s. Blew the motor, so he bought a crate one and installed it in the parking lot. Eli`s.

Here you go. I took these in Indy in 2015 at the CCR. A convertible with altered bows looks so much better than a Carson style top, in my opinion. Scan0181.jpg Scan0185.jpg Scan0182.jpg Scan0183.jpg Scan0184.jpg Scan0187.jpg Scan0188.jpg Scan0179.jpg

Those 2 Merc ragtops runnin' buddies? Any comments on the different headlight treatment. The red one has a more traditional tunneled french. The green car's headlights are french flushed.

Ron is from New York and the other is from Illinois. I think I got that right. You can see the owner behind Ron`s Merc in the second to last pic(sitting down). Looks to be in his 80`s. I think Ron went to a Merc/Deuce Reunion in 79 or 84. Organized a bunch of Mercs to the Midwest from his area. About 10 or so. He had a Merc Convert as well. Could be the same car. It shows him in a magazine heading down the road with the top down and a trophy in the back seat.

Well you have chosen another one, just right! I love the shoebox coupes. They are hard to chop and get it right. And an unchopped one, like we see hear, may soon become a commodity with a high premium, like the unchopped 49-51 Mercs. On some of the other sites I visit, I see these coupes being chopped at a maniacal rate! And like I say, it is hard to get them right, and it is difficult to witness the carnage.
But Mo, what is that in the middle of the hood?

  11. @quick85 It's very mild but I would say mild custom, because of the teeth added to the grill.

  12. I'd say mild custom, I guess. But, to me, it leans more towards being a bomb or "bomba". E

It's hard to realize now, but the "mildly customized Merc" that James Dean drove in "Rebel Without a Cause" created quite a stir when the movie debuted in 1955, and became the very icon of disenfranchised youth in America.

  16. That '57 is just right!

  17. I claim absolutely no credit for the striping on the car. It was done by a super talented young guy out of Regina by the name of Sky Lorencz.

Does anyone know where the '54 Ford convertible is now. It was the last car built by a friend of ours before he passed away. THANKS

  19. "Back in the day," that car would have had shiny paint.................

Time and time again, the old timers in Iowa always tell me only the rich kids had shinny paint and no primmer spots back in the day. Everybody else was to poor. The old timers were usually farmers.

It's lowered, grille frame painted & teeth added, pin striped flames - yes, it is a mild custom.
And I like it very much! Why modify when it's good looking from the beginning? I think I would like a -53-54 Chevy done just this way if only had one... Kind of "Mexican look", isn't it? a Bomb

My first car was a '52 Ford 4dr (they were cheaper) "Mild" custom. Couldn't afford to pay anyone for body work so I had to learn myself. Nosed, decked, shaved door handles '49 Merc grille and '56 Chevvy tail light lens instead of the usual Olds lens with a California rake. Installed a '51 Merc engine and painted it myself it our old garage. (we don't need no stinking respirators). The Ford never left me stranded and always started in the cold Wisconsin winters. Once it was 20 below zero and I used it to jump start my Dads ’53 Buick that was kept in the garage. High school memories. Named "Lil Tilt"

Fast forward and for the last 33 years I've driving my '49 Merc Coupe that has all the things I wanted back then but couldn't afford. Named "Sweet Dreams" I consider it a "Mild" custom too.
