I crossed paths with Steve a few times through the years, had the pleasure of making the replacement panels for one of his Funny Cars, after a pretty bad crash. His "Lil Punkin" C/G 40 Ford Coupe was one of my favorites in the mid-60's. The last time I remember seeing him was a couple of years ago, and took this shot of him (black shirt) talking A/GS cars with my old pal Dennis Murray. RIP Steve. Steve McGee.jpg IMG_4774.JPG

Cool shot Marty. Very reminiscent of post race Woodburn in the beer area on the west side of the track. Chatted with Steve a few times and a good friend bought his old shop in Lake Oswego while working for him as a tech. It's changed hands since then but the building is still there

Rocky - - Thank you for your response! Some great history there.

Oilguy - - No, my Dad graduated from Redmond in 1974 and didn't go to OTI.

I talked to Dale Withers a few days ago, he told me that he is finishing the green paint job on Steve's 53/54 Chevy Hardtop. Steve and Dale put a lot of miles on it in bare metal, and they were hoping to show it finished, but it was not to be. Dale also thinks he can get me a picture of Steve's Orange C/G 40 deluxe coupe. They were friends for over 50 years !

As mentioned above, I think Coololdcars is referring to this Anglia when he said, "I own what possibly used to be Scottys Drive in Anglia........can't confirm though." Does anyone know anything about it?

1963 Oakland Roadster Show From http://www.hotrod.com/articles/1963...6AFC04294028721DD5EF737DAEE3639B9709A8D929F59

"Bob Tindle’s Orange Crate 1932 Ford got everyone’s attention with its unusual tilt-up body. The Portland, Oregon creation won the Competition half of the 10-foot trophy, America’s Best Competition Car. The 417 cubic inch 1960 Olds engine had a front-mounted Potvin blower. The suspension and the Halibrand quick-change rearend came from a sprint car, as did the Halibrand magnesium wheels."

I am sure that's the Scotty's Drive In (Brewer and Maki) A/G Anglia, It was green in the beginning, with orange plexi-glass windows.

"The yellow A/G Anglia was Brewer & Maki, out of Portland Or. Ken Maki would move to AA/FD with a Fuller car, with Ed McCulloch as driver. Ken also operated a very successful 19 cent hamburger stand, called Scotty's Drive In. Gary Lewis would run the Willys PU, through the 70's advancing to a blown 426 Hemi ." Marty Strode

  17. One clue as to the car being the Scotty's Drive in car is the cowl. The old race photo shows no vent or clamshell on the side of the cowl. Mine has none either. I understand this is quite rare. Pics show the backside of my cowl, showing it was never filled. 20161201_184625.jpg 20161201_184732.jpg 20161201_184625.jpg facebook_1479401430089.jpg 20161201_184625.jpg 20161201_184732.jpg facebook_1479401430089.jpg

I attended the Mopar Nationals yesterday at Woodburn and had a great day. In the late afternoon the announcer (Jim Livingston's 17-year old grandson) started asking who had been to Woodburn for more than 5 years, 10 years, 20 years, etc., and to raise your hand. When he got to 30 years it sort of ended but only due to a couple of cars making burn outs. I still had my hand up when the question of 30 years came up. A couple of minutes later a fellow and his wife came over to where I was standing and he asked me how long I had been going there. I told him I've been going there since the first event in 1961. He said he started racing there in 1964. Come to find out it was Jim Hoxit and the car he raced at the time was his "Goofin Off" 55 Chevy. I remember the car well. What a great chance meeting!

It's great to hear Jim is still around. I don't remember his 55 Chevy, but this 34 Coupe is very memorable to me. This shot was at Woodburn around '65. goofin noff 6.jpg

Very neat picture of his Coupe Marty. I think I remember that car too but it's a little vague. There surely was some overlap of the 34' and the 55' and at both Woodburn and McMinnville. I'm guessing that the 55' had the engine from the 34' (or at least I sure recall the 55' to be Hilborn injected). Interestingly, Jim told me he was in the Navy when Woodburn actually opened or he would have been there earlier. He and his wife looked to be the pictures of health. I am still dumbfounded that I had this chance meeting with a local great.

The Chev was sitting in the winner's circle most of the day/evening last Saturday at Woodburn Dragstrip for their "Night of Fire" show all done up in green and looking awesome. Didn't get a chance to take a close look but she was purdy. Huegli did a tribute solo pass in the "Tiki Warrior" to Steve according to the PA and the family had some incredible vintage t-shirts from the "Sunshine Pizza" Monza Funny Car day's I caught a quick glimpse of. I was a little busy to see exactly what was going on.

I would liked to have been at Woodburn Saturday night, but I have been thrashing on Jim Lindsay's Bonneville car, getting ready for Speedweek. It's been tough on an old man, building headers, firewall work, mounting dry sump tanks, especially because of the heat wave that we are having ! IMG_0440.JPG IMG_0438.JPG

Did anyone go to the Old Timer's Picnic this year? Did they have it? I didn't get a flyer and I have in past years, so I am sure I am on the mailing list. I missed it and I guess it's going to be ok. I like that show and hope they do it again.

Yes they had it the end of July. I received an invite but was unable to attend. Lots of stuff going on that time of year.
