  2. I "filled" my roof because I hate seeing the fabric balooning while blasting down the highway with all the windows down, and I was worried about the insert leaking. But I didn't weld in a big piece of sheet metal. Instead I seam sealed and screwed a 59 Edsel roof section into the wood opening inside of where the factory tack strip goes. This solved the balooning and made the roof water tight. From there I installed a factory style insert using a combination of 1/4 inch foam glued to the Edsel roof, Model A pinpoint vinyl stapled to the wood surrounding the opening, and finished it off with 33/34 reproduction top trim. It's the best of both worlds.

I would like to use a sheet metal insert with the original top insert material over it for my 32 5 window. Is there a late model car roof that would work well for this?

I get the trim today, tomorrow we'll be installing it and I'll take lots of process pics. It ain't easy, it ain't for everyone, but it's worth the effort. Stay tuned, and whatcha all think, here or a dedicated topic?

Nope. Don't like the look. Would rather have stock insert or removable vinyl.

Looks too street roddy to me.

  8. Filling is a common mod. I like them with the panel screwed in for some reason better. Maybe it has to do with too damned lazy to weld it. But my excuse is that I can remove the filler panel when the weather is good. But the real reason is that I am too damned lazy to weld one in. I mean really who actually goes through the trouble to remove the filler panel when the weather is good.:D

In generally I like As not welded in. I like the look of a deuce or a model 40 both ways either a padded filler or a welded in metal filler. Like someone else mentioned it depends on the build.

  9. My top was completely cut out. Was an old stock car racer. I welded in a panel from a corvair top. 34top1.jpg 34-12_14.jpg

or sux worse having to remove a nasty welded roof skin filler

the last roof I filled was in the mid 90s, I dont miss doing them either

I have a '29 Tudor, not filling it, going for a traditional look. To me filled roofs in some cases look to street rod to me, just my opinion.
