  1. 59 is the first year, the 58 is a home built custom.

  7. This is an Elky my grandson and I restored several years ago. Basket case was his 13th birthday present, we did a ground up resto. He only drove it for a few months then had to sell it to get on with life. those two years working together every spare moment was priceless start car 1.JPG Troy welding new floors small.jpg troy to prime 1.JPG Troy torque heads 2.JPG wiring small.jpg Troy cleaning1.JPG troy and me small.jpg P1010528.JPG steering column small.jpg standing small.jpg .

Thinking of building a 59 elco (I don't yet own) that is all apart. Are there any clips for the car that are not available either repro or other? The car has all of the stainless but clips are a crap shoot. Guessing some clips might even come from a 1960 as well. Anybody have experience in this area?
    Thanks.

Ive been slowly chipping away on my 60. Havent gotten to installing my trim yet, hopefully Ill be there before the end of the year. I have located some of the harder to find trim clips through Dave Kosmann trim restoration.

Willys36 - very nice job on the 59 with your grandson!

Yes that black 59 is as good as it gets, simple, no bs and all done up with correct fuel injection including 1 year only emblems. Hemifarris doesn't post here anymore. I hope he is OK. That car is easily the best I have ever seen.

Clips - there was another recent post about this. I have done many 59s so I will pretend to know what I am talking about...Side trim, most is available, try Mr Gs for the butterfly type. You can make others pretty easily. Fin trim clips are readily available from the El Camino Store, maybe Ecklers or Impala Bobs. I bought some last year but don't remember where. There are a couple of oddball designs where the fin trim turns the corner at the rear but they are the same as any 59 Chevy. The hard ones to find are the ones on the tailgate, kinda an odd shape but again they are the same as any 59. Clips for the windshield stainless also available at usual sources. Rear roof stainless is a bit tricky but on most cars they are still in place. Don't be a scaredee cat. Maybe I should do a thread on this...

And lastly a photo of one I am working on, sorry if posted before but I am recently excited cuz I just drove it on Monday after doing lots o mechanical work. It was a little cold with no windshield. Last foto is as found after sitting for many years. 20170102_094134.jpg 20170102_094244.jpg IMG_0828.JPG

And one more. These photos are of the same car. It is amazing what $30K can do. 20160227_154102.jpg P2220728.JPG

A friend wanted to build a ElCamino conversion like my 56. He eventually found a rough 57 Chevy that someone had already started converting. The top was really messed up and not worth saving. His new top choice is from a 59 ElCamino that he had to narrow to fit on his 57.

What are the bed dimensions of the 59-65 el caminos?

What i'm getting at is, can you haul 4' x 8' sheets of plywood FLAT in the back?

I had a Ranchero and got rid of it because of limited leg room. It looks like the '59 El Caminos have might have more cab room. Are any of you guys big? How's the fit?

  19. Short answer is... NO. Dimensions with tailgate closed for '59 are: 76.25" L, 47.625" W, 12.750" H, and 46.5" between wheel wells. You can add about another two feet of length with the tailgate down. These dimensions shud be the same for the '60. I'm not sure about the '64/'65, but probably smaller, if different.

  20. Well, I'm not what one wud call tall, but surely a little on the wide side. I'm really comfy in there. Here's some dimensions, if they wud mean anything to you. Widths are: 66.125" hip room, 60.5" shoulder room, and 57.25" hat room. Here are some measurements with the seat all the way back: from mid seat to roof is 36.125", from small of the seat back to bottom of the steering column is 14.75", from front edge of seat to bottom of the steering column is 5.25", from front edge of seat to the floor is 9.25", and from front edge of the seat to the toe board is 45".

Thanks. I hate to ask anyone at a show if I can sit in their car. It'd be different if it's for sale but...
