Does anyone know what this chevy inline head came with stock? Right now, it looks like someone did a valve job and port/polished the head. We are trying to figure out what the hp/torque will be running it on a 292 with an offy intake and large holley 2bbl 350. Plus, we picked up a set of headers for it. These are smaller ones 2 inch or 2 1/2 inch header flanges.

I do not think it can be lump ported since the ported job was really extreme.

We picked it up for 80.00. The valves look fine. Just some carbon build up.

I think I found it 62-74 292. We have the stock head on it right now on a 292 66 chevy C30 dually. This one we picked up definitely had some work done to it.

we need pictures, to go along with a description like that

  4. Well about 700 horse and 823 ft pounds.

here is the deal if you post a known combination we can sort of ball park you on hp and torque. given that we have some idea of your building and tuning skills. Even at that it is pure guesswork.

We can say yes try that head if we can see it or no I wouldn't run that. But that is about as close as anyone on here is going to get and be truthful with you.

The thing about porting is you have to know where in the port to remove the material and reshape it, but also consideration must be given to how the engine will be used. If those ports have been hawged out (like your description) for an all out race effort to be used with a big cam and lots of carb, then it won't work well with your stock cam and proposed induction. One the other hand, if it's had some decent bowl work and mild port cleanup by someone who knows that head, it could compliment and improve your combo nicely. But, if the port work was done by inexperienced hack thinking way bigger is way better, it will probably produce less power than a stock piece or worse, be junk due to cracks developing into water jackets after your get it hot.
What do you know about that ported head? Who did the work and for what reasons?
Interesting that you got it for $80.

I sent the head to a local shop to get cleaned up and magnafluxed. There was no reason to spend any more money until I can figure out if it.

I ran a 292 with a Sissell/Kirby ported head on pulling tractor. The head had the large valves and the stud boss removed. It was not a lump port head. It had flat top pistons at zero deck. The bottom end was stock and balanced. Never tested anything. It was suppose to have between 275 and 300 Hp. I still have the tractor but do not pull anymore.

The valves measured 1.94. Yesterday, I picked it up from the machine shop. It was magnafluxed and pressure tested. Everything checked out. I bought new seals. We are going to clean up the carbon off of the valves and lap them.

I will get a picture of the head. I do not know who did the porting on it. I know we cannot run any lumps inside it.

Also, need to pick up a set of screw in studs for it.

The machine shop said the porting was done by a professional. He could tell based upon the work. He was quite surprised on the work done to it. His coworker said he used to run on with a lump ports. This one could take lump ports though I think we are just going to pass on it for now.

We will put a bigger cam and carb on it. I bought him an offy that will take a 4 bbl. At first I thought that a 2 bbl would be fine for him for now. We got a 2 bbl adapter and largest holley 2 bbl.

Seems you scored a nice piece for your $80, then. Should be a fun engine.

The rust is superficial. The pictures are not that clear. Also, my son is in the process of cleaning up the carbon from inside the passages. He wants to make it look like a shiny nickel on the exhaust ports.

I guess I'm not up on 6 cyl. What are "lump ports"?

I did not score it... My 16 year old son scored it for his 1966 C30.

The pics look familiar. From the shape of the combustion chamber, it looks to be a 194 head. It was the only head with small combustion chamber.

Is it still worth it to install?

I would install it for sure. I ran the Offy 3x1 intake with headers. I liked the idea of a carb on each one of those intake openings. I ran the 2barrel carbs from Langdon. It was a sweet ride, 300 ft. at a time. lol
