Hey all of you highboy builders.
My front fenders are both rags.
Anybody got any good fronts for a '29?

 

I didn't think of my lakes-type megaphones as hiding anything; I love the lean, spidery look of a true AV8 which provides a perfect space to park those big pipes out of the way without losing its lean look! It's like reverse engineering . . .




My inspiration was Don Ferrara's AV8 which I first saw in 1951 and immediately started scheming to build one of my own.

Sure looks like a Model A frame to me. The side aprons do give it a Deuce look -- sort of -- however.

Looks unsorted, rather that sort-of to me. How hard is it to get rid of that tin that connects the running boards (that are not there) with the body?

I guess if a guy wants a '32, he should have one. They make them brand new, now. No rust, either (except for the sprayed-on ones on some of the fiberglass bodies).

 

Yes it still has the aprons. I like it. Makes the frame abit more beefy. Besides. In Norway they dont allow aftermarketframes on any car , stock or hot rod.

It was actually quite common to see the side aprons left on, back in the day.
The principal reason is you have to pull the body to remove them.
A lot of guys simply didn't bother.
Personally, I love the look.
And I prefer the early (28-29) one piece aprons, even on a 30-31.

 

It is quite an engineering feat to loosen the six or eight bolts and slip them out. They look incomplete. Here's back-in-the-day (depending on which day you are referring to . . .

 

Once you have the valance off you can cut the inside of the mounting hole into a slot so you can slide the valance out without taking the bolt right out

Hopup, here are a bunch of picts of my roadster, it was originally built in 1956 in Sun Valley California by Herb McGregor and his son with a new 364 cu. In. 57 Buick engine, dynaflow and 40 Ford rear end it was raced at San Fernando Drag strip and driven on the street. It had wood floors and all the inner structure removed from the doors to make it light, it was channeled over a Model A frame, had 40 Ford steering and brakes. when the son got married he put the car in his dads garage and moved away, it sat in the garage until I got it. I put new fuel lines in it started it and drove it home and then drove it as my daily car from the 70's thru the 90's. In 1998 I upgraded the engine trans and rear end to a bored .060 over 425 Buick G/S engine, turbo 400 trans and Hildibrand Champ rear end with Detroit lockers. In 2000 I had a bad wreck in it and enlisted my friend Richard Ruth He Built the 2 lane blacktop / American graffiti 55 Chevy, Frantic Fred Badberg's winning 27 roadster and many other race cars and rods, so Richard built me a new Model A frame,steel floors, adjustible rear spring purch, just like the original with some improvements. I knocked out the bends and tweeks in the body and primed it got it back together and have been using it since then. It's really a great old 50's car! Best regards John Williamson
