Whats next?

 

-Gas pedal and cable (maybe a kit, the old cannot be used)
-Cutting the old manual gear box steering wheel commande
-Cutting the old clutch floor command (under the floor)
-Create a new gearbox tunnel
-A new carpet
-Mount the new transmission camshaft
-Radiator and hoses
-Exhaust
-Done all electricity, with electronic dash, new buttons, changing everything (horn, light bulb...all in 12v, my car is in 6v with no fuses)
-Changing tires (real whitewall)
-New hubcaps
-Rear bumper
-New taillights
-Changing some body modifications
-New lookin' style with trim and chrome
-Primer and new paint
-Hardcore decoration
-Various finishes (shifter knob, engine parts like chrome air filter....and more)

After that, Ratatouille and the girl with the car, travel everywhere in the world drinking beers with new Hamb friends....but first, gas pedal

 

Sounds like a good plan!

I'm lost!

Well, today I recuperated my transmission shaft.

The job is correct, and the dimensions are ok.

The part is installed.

And of course, I'm happy to test the result, and after "my lot of work", SHIT APPENS

I have try to move the car......and.....

5 REVERSES AND 1 FORWARD!!!!!!

DAMNED!!!!!!!

I don't know what I must do. I have check the Pinto sense of rotation, it's the same that the Fregate.

I'm FUCKED

 

Chrisp, is there a happy end to this story? I need help.

I have the first rear end model(1954) counter clockwise, and I think the Hypoide rear end (1957) is clockwise......If someone can confirm me that this 2 models of Fregate rear end have different rotation senses.....?????.....it's maybe my solution......

Can you flip the rear axle over and move the spring pads? Do t know how well that would work on 60 year old gears that are used to turning one direction at highway speed.

Put the drivers seat in backwards and swap the tail lights for the headlights. There may be hope yet! I have a buddy that is familiar with older Renault cars, not quite as old as yours. He suggested on some of the differentials it is possible to remove the center section and flip it around. Possibly done from an engineering standpoint to make it fit more applications. He's seen it done before by accident during a rebuild causing the problem you have now. So maybe that's your fix. Best of luck. Too late to give up on it now.

You must find an hypoïd fregate rear end (after 1957), with all the support that is different.
It's the "pleasure" of customization

The Fregate is not equipped with a standard rear wheel positraction, it's an independent suspension, like Jaguar, no leaf spring. (pics soon, it's raining)

The tips to upside down or flip the old Renault parts it's only when differential and gearbox are all in 1. The same thing on VW bettle and camper or Corvair or Dauphine (rear engine cars...or somes front wheel drive Renault cars). The Fregate is not like that cars.

All Fregate engines rotate Clockwise, like the Pinto.

I have check my old Renault gearbox, model 277, and when I turn the front axle, the rear turn opposite. In fact, when you use 277 gearbox, you must use Type 6 differential only, it's an inseparable combo. Counter Clockwise rotation. What I have on my Fregate.

The second generation use 295 Gearbox, use with Type 350 differential, Clockwise rotation. (more "standard" and "modern", I'm a lucky guy)

For the motor swap, I have only check the rotation of both engines, not what kind of differential type I was equipped....my unknown mistake.

The good news is that is possible to have 5 speed and one reverse with the Type 350 Renault differential and my Ford Engine/Gearbox combo.

Now, I must find all the parts......

 

At least there is a feasible solution. As has been said here, before, your perseverance is inspiring! Keep at it. This is one of my favorite HAMB build threads.

 

I gotta say even though you really run in to some crappy situations you are always able to find a solution. That's one of the main reasons I enjoy your adventure.
Remember the 3 P's. "Patience, Perseverance and Profanity!". It has served me well.

 

Have you thought about going back to the breakers where you got the engine and gearbox and use the Sierra rear axle/suspension. If you can get the Sierra rear axle and copy or use the brackets from the fregate rear axle you should be able to bolt the Sierra axle straight on to the fregate chassis brackets. Obviously you will need to use four stud ford wheels.

I have a center section that I'm not using from a '58. But I'm in Normandy.

 

Would the centre section from the sierra work?
If so you can have the thing for the price of post,

 

Does the frigate original gearbox output turn the other way ?
Counter clockwise ?

rgdavid, i prefer first to swap the old 1954 differential by the 1958. Because it's more "plug and play" ;-).
Yes of course the Sierra differential is a good option, and similar, but there is too much work, and adaptations. But thanks again for your great proposition.

Yes, the original 1951/1956 gearbox (model 277) turn counter clockwise.

The problem is that I should do it again the transmission shaft, and also 2 propshaft....and it's too expensive for me. I cannot do the job with my limited tools.....If one day I modify the rear end, I will put an entire IRS Jaguar rear end with disk brake.

But you right, Sierra differential is the second logical option, but not for now.

It is difficult to work in the street, on the ground, in safe conditions (neighbors, cars park across my car, and other personal reasons....), leave the car without rear wheels, up on jack is not feasible. The car must look like functional every time i doesn't work on it.....(I must clean all the place everyday...).

 

You have to work with what you have. There is no shame in that.

No time for the rear end today, because I must move the car. I have install gas pedal (cheaper spoon :-(...china made, I have modify all the parts, nothing was adjust, wrong parts in the packet, well, Chinese parts)....that not working perfectly, but I'm in rush to move the car.


Mission complete, it move!, bye bye the wall, I'm in center place. I can see again the Fregate front. Still a lot of work to drive it correctly, but I'm happy to move the car again.
Now, I can work on kool things. I'm boring about heavy charges, I need for my mental to work on small details


My licence plate smack the ground! I need original uncut front springs.
