  7. I know this is an old thread, but I thought I would add to it anyway. The first song that I thought of is, I Can't Drive 55, by Sammy Hagar.

One foot on the brake and one on the gas, hey
Well, there's too much traffic, I can't pass, no
So I tried my best illegal move
A big black and white come and crushed my groove again

Go on and write me up for 125
Post my face, wanted dead or alive
Take my license, all that jive
    I can't drive 55, oh no, uh

So I signed my name on number 24, hey
Yeah the judge said, "Boy, just one more, huh
I'm gonna throw your ass in the city joint"
Looked me in the eye, said, "You get my point?"
    I say "Yeah!, Oh yeah"

    Write me up for 125
Post my face, wanted dead or alive
Take my license, all that jive
    I can't drive 55, oh yeah

    (I can't drive 55)
    (I can't drive 55)
    (I can't drive 55)
    (I can't drive) 55, uh

When I drive that slow, you know it's hard to steer
And I can't get my car out of second gear
What used to take two hours now takes all day
Huh, it took me 16 hours to get to L.A.

Go on and write me up for 125
Post my face, wanted dead or alive
Take my license, all that jive
    I can't drive 55

I've always liked these corny lyrics...... Jan and Dean...

She’s six years old but don’t you knock her
'Cause at the drags she’s the hottest stocker
Looks pretty square at first inspection
But she really scrams with fuel injection

She places every week number one in her class
With a 283 that runs on gas
When the flag is dropped you know she always squeals
Those race master slicks on big mag wheel

Hot Stocker sure is clean now
Wouldn’t trade her for a limousine now
Hot Stocker with her bang shift hydro
Eats 'em up left and right out of the hole

Her locked rear end really makes her hustle
And that V8 mill's got a lot of muscle
    A quarter mile ET 10.9
That '57 Chevy is nothing but fine

Hot Stocker sure is clean now
Wouldn’t trade her for a limousine now
Hot Socker with her bang shift hydro
Eats 'em up left and right out of the hole

Her locked rear end really makes her hustle
And that V8 mill's got a lot of muscle
    A quarter-mile ET 10.9
That '57 Chevy is nothing but fine

This song is about a girl but with a cool car reference...It will alway remind me of my youth. Learned to play this song in my first band when i was 13. The version we played was just how Sid Vicious covered it which was just some upbeat punk...but you can't beat the original. It's a 41 Ford...

Eddie Cochran – Somethin' Else Lyrics
A look a-there, here she comes
    There comes that girl again
Wanted to date her since I don't know when
But she don't notice me when I pass
She goes with all the guys from outa my class
But that can't stop me from a-thinkin' to myself
    She's sure fine-lookin' man, she's something else

Hey, look a-there, across the street
There's a car made just for me
To own that car would be a luxury
But my dollar can't afford the gas
A brand new convertible is outa my class
But that can't stop me from a-thinkin' to myself
    That car's fine-lookin' man, it's something else

Hey, look a-here, just wait and see
Worked hard and saved my dough
I'll buy that car that I been wanting so
Get me that girl and we'll go ridin' around
We'll look real sharp with the flight top down
I keep right on a-dreamin' and a-thinkin' to myself
When it all comes true man, wow, that's something else

    Look a-there, what's all this
Never thought I'd do this before
But here I am a-knockin' on her door
My car's out front and it's all mine
    Just a forty-one Ford, not a fifty-nine
I got that girl an' I'm a-thinkin' to myself
She's sure fine-lookin' man, wow, she's something else

If they'd known what we was up to they wouldn't 'a let us in
When we landed in Memphis like original sin
Up Elvis Presley Boulevard to the Graceland gates
See we were lookin' for a Cadillac with Tennessee plates

Well, there must have been a dozen of them parked in that garage
And there wasn't one Lincoln and there wasn't one Dodge
And there wasn't one Japanese model or make
Just pretty, pretty Cadillacs with Tennessee plates

I like this by Springsteen because it reminds me of the way things really were. Sitting at the local
Dog 'n Suds, Big Boy or White Castle, or cruising to another town. Checking out cars, setting up
a race and then driving to a spot that someone knows about. Give the money to someone that
both guys can agree on and pick a starter (no girl whipping off her bra).

"We only run for the money, got no strings attached
We shut 'em up and then we shut 'em down"

The Beach Boys albums ..Little Deuce Coupe and Shut Down from 1964 were the background music and driving force for a whole generation . I was 14 riding a stingray at the time and dreaming of racing a cool car. The song lyrics "Buddy gonna Shut you Down" and "go Cherry Cherry Coupe Now" still sends chills up my spine !! and the lyrics in 409..." my four speed, dual quad , positraction 409" !! Well you just had to have been there in "64 to really understand. Those of us that were lucky to have come of age during this short but inspirational time in music history. Sure there have been other cool car singles before and since but never has there been the sheer volume of entire
albums dedicated to cars , hot rods and drag racing as there was in '64, and never again will there be.

The best hot rod song had no lyrics except for...Rev Up! -- Manuel & The Renegades, 1962.

My second fave car / guitar instrumental was "Car Hop" by The Exports. This one had a few more words..."Hey car hop. I want a hamburger with mustard and onions, give me two coffees with cream
and sugar, how 'bout a milkshake, I want onions, man".

OT, but a damn good song & a band you should all check out:
1970 Monte Carlo By The Bastard Sons Of Johnny Cash
    G
Well, I pour myself behind to wheel
    C
Too tired to think and too numb to feel
    G D
and hear that 350 whining low
    G
all I need is an open road and some
    C
    Johnny Cash on the stereo
    G D G
and things ain't as bad as they seem

    Chorus 1:
    C D G G/F# Em
    Nineteen Seventy Monte Carlo Chevrolet
    C D G
I swear sometimes you were my only friend

    G
"Get rhythm" blasting from the dash
    C
in a cloud of smoke and cigarette ash
    G D
But that old girl starts up every time
    G
And any time that I'm feelin' low
    C
I got the Man in Black on my stereo
    G D G
and that brings a smile to my face

    Chorus 2:
    C D G G/F# Em
    Nineteen Seventy Monte Carlo Chevrolet
    C D G
I swear sometimes you were my only friend
    C D
with a headliner ripped and torn
    G G/F# Em
just like me she's a little worn
    C D G
but you could always see me home again

    Bridge:
    D C
I ain't braggin but that girl can really roll
    C D
she's never left me busted flat or standing in the cold

    Chorus 2

  17. I enjoy these old threads. Love all the cool car songs too. My first one as a kid was one called { Beep Beep } . It's about a Nash Rambler passing a Caddy. I found it on YouTube. My grand kids get a kick out of it. The song starts out very slow. Then as the cars go faster, so does the music and words of the song. The kids play as if they are the cars. They will start walking very slow, and as the song speeds up, they will go faster and faster. by the end of the song they are running at full speed thought out the house. lol If you have kids, look it up, and play it for them. They will Love it! Ron...

The best ever... SILVER THUNDERBIRD Marc Cohn

    Watched it coming up Winslow
    Down South Park Boulevard
Yeah it was looking good from tail to hood
Great big fins and painted steel
Man it looked just like the Batmobile
With my old man behind the wheel
Well you could hardly even see him
    In all of that chrome
The man with the plan and the pocket comb
But every night it carried him home
And I could hear him sayin'...
    Don't gimme no Buick
Son you must take my word
If there's a God in heaven
    He's got a Silver Thunderbird
    You can keep your Eldorados
    And the foreign car's absurd
Me I want to go down
    In a Silver Thunderbird
    He got up every morning
    While i was still asleep
But I remember the sound of him shuffling around
Then right before the crack of dawn
I heard him turn the motor on
But when I got up they were gone
Down the road in the rain and snow
The man and his machine would go
Oh the secrets that old car would know
    Sometimes I hear him sayin'...

Yes, it was, but so was "Corvair Baby":

"Stick with me, baby, & stay by my side, Corvair baby
Cause I want you there whenever we ride, Corvair baby
We'll be together wherever we go, & everybody will know
Cause you're my baby, my Corvair baby & I'll, I'll never let you go"

BEEP BEEP The Playmates - 1958 (very slowly) Beep beep beep beep His horn went beep beep beep While riding in my Cadillac What to my surprise A little Nash Rambler was following me About one third my size The guy musta wanted to pass me up As he kept on tooting his horn I'll show him that a Cadillac is not a car to scorn Beep beep beep beep His horn went beep beep beep (slowly) I pushed my foot down to the floor To give the guy the shake But the little Nash Rambler stayed right behind He still had on his brake He musta thought his car had more guts As he kept on tooting his horn (beep beep) I'll show him that a Cadillac is not a car to scorn Beep beep beep beep His horn went beep beep beep (normal speed) My car went into passing gear And we took off with gust (whoosh) Soon we were going ninety Musta left him in the dust When I peeked in the mirror of my car I couldn't believe my eyes The little Nash Rambler was right behind You'd think that guy could fly Beep beep beep beep His horn went beep beep beep (quickly) Now we were doing a hundred and ten This certainly was a race For a Rambler to pass a Caddy Would be a big disgrace The guy musta wanted to pass me up As he kept on tooting his horn (beep beep) I'll show him that a Cadillac is not a car to scorn Beep beep beep beep His horn went beep beep beep (very quickly) Now we're going a hundred twenty As fast as I can go The Rambler pulled along side of me As if we were going slow The fella rolled down his window And yelled for me to hear "Hey buddy how do I get this car outa second gear?"

    So bye-bye, Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry
And them good old boys were drinking whiskey 'n rye
Singing, "This’ll be the day that I die
"This’ll be the day that I die."

    Springsteen
I know it was her pink Cadillac
    Crushed velvet seats
    Riding in the back
    Oozing down the street
    Waving to the girls
    Feeling out of sight
    Spending all my money
    On a Saturday night
Honey I just wonder what it feels like in the back
    Of your pink Cadillac
    Pink Cadillac

And from a nearly life long former neighbor:

    Seger
Out past the cornfields where the woods got heavy
Out in the back seat of my '60 Chevy
Workin' on mysteries without any clues
    Workin' on our night moves
Tryin' to make some front page drive-in news
    Workin' on our night moves
    In the summertime
    In the sweet summertime

Downtown Clarkston. You can see Morgan's Marathon to the left (our ride is just about out of sight there), further up is the old First Baptist Church where my Mom was a member, and where I learned to play the organ, and swing-dance. Now it's a bar-restaurant called "The Union Station" and nearly famous people like Kid Rock go there to be seen.

Bonnie Hess was my good friend in high school, and her dad was the town cop and we'd get slightly liquored up & take turns melting rubber from the Marsh slicks on my 64 Tempest 421 into the street. She had a damned good clutch foot!
