Art & Inspiration Do you have a vintage gas pump?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by HOTRODPRIMER, Apr 26, 2017.

  1. I have had this old visible Tokheim gas pump for more than 40 years and purchased it when they could be found on old farms and were no longer in use.

The old pump doubles as a visual reminder of the early days of motoring but makes a great yard light. HRP

I wish I could afford an older pump... I just have this 125 dollar 50s pump I picked up at a swap meet 2 years ago

Always wanted one, I STILL do. There's no place where they're $100 or $125 anymore though. At least not in Southern California.

I don't really have the room for one anyway on a small suburban lot. I've thought about making a simulated one to mount to the wall inside my garage. Maybe after i retire.

Just finishing up this one for my garage. It's a 1960 and I don't have a lot in it. Works for me.

    My wife says I'm a gas pump.

Haven't found one reasonable priced enough around here, not even a rusty one. Thought about doing like Dan In Pasadena said, make a fake on just for display, but too many irons in the fire right now.

  15. Crappy old pic an ex-girlfriend took of a gas pump I helped restore. The intent was to raffle it off for extra funds to the Auto Club. Almost got abandoned as things usually do at the Club. I took over and finished it off. I remember wet sanding and buffing out the panels. Even cutting the glass. Turned out real nice. I even hand painted a sign to promote the raffle.
I had a lot of ambition back then.

How ironic this thread was started today. My best friend Dave, had restored this pump and had bought a few more. Exactly one year ago tomorrow he called me and told me he had an inoperable brain tumor and was given a 3 to 6 month time frame. I was in shock for quite some time. About 3 weeks after this news there was a knock at my shop door. In walked Dave, his wife and son. They raised the shop door and in the back of his truck was this pump. He said " I want you to have this one. It's one that I personally restored" I couldn't hold back the tears just as I can't now while typing this. I have it safely in my cave and will never part wit it as long as I'm alive. Dave passed away on Nov. 4th of last year just shy of his 62nd birthday. 2017-04-26 15.51.31.jpg Thanks buddy. I think about you every day......

IMG_0098.JPG The pump came from the farm down the road 30 years ago. They were glad that eye sore was gone!

My Pops always looked at the expensive ones at the local swap meets and said he'd buy one someday. With the help of a good friend and my brother I did this one and gave it to Pop's for Christmas.[IMG][IMG]

  22. Pop's friend moved into an "assisted living" apartment. Standing on the patio he could see that the neighbors had a tall, Visible pump. He chatted with them and wound up buying it from them. They had bought it from a station nearby on the local Reservation. The globe was painted "Serve Um Self Gas"..
For some reason it was one of the only things that he hurried up and got rid of before he died. Sold it to a friend up the road that has restored many- at least 75, probably more. Told me the other day he still has it and doesn't think he'll redo it, just buff it out and fix the couple little things. Nice living in the desert where things forget to rust.

IMG_1781.JPG Here is my "Island" in front of my shop. I also have a Mobil gas Special pump inside and a few others in line for restoration.
The next one will be a Bennett done as a "Wisco 99" (a local Wisconsin brand from the late 50's early 60's)
