I bought a new wiring harness and can't seem to figure out how to wire the gauges. Does it matter what post a connect the hot to? Also where does the wiring connect to my oil pressure gauge. Any help would be appreciated. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
yes, it matters which post you connect "hot" to. Look carefully at the insulator paper near the terminals, it might say I and S, faintly stamped into it. S is sender, I is ignition (hot). Or look for pictures of the assembly manual, it will show which side is which. No power to the oil pressure gauge, it's mechanical, not electric. But it will have a light.
The rear of the gauges MAY be marked I and S for ignition (hot) and sender. And it does matter which side is connected to a specific source. If there are no terminals on the oil gauge, it is mechanical and requires a pressure line from the engine. http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/electrical/wiring/pdf/51truck.pdf
Also does that piece of card board on the gas gauge matter? Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
It's broke apart do I need to put a unbroken piece or is it fine as long as it's under the screw? Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I just bought these gauges. My original were bad and I found this for an awesome price Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app

now we just need a picture of the back of a gauge assembly, with the pink label still (at least partly) visible.
is this specific for your truck, or universal? instructions with pictures/drawings? pick up a copy of How To Wire Your StreetRod From Start To Finish by Jack Sweeden from speedwaymotors.com and others - do no let the title scare you
I bought the harness from Summit was specific for my truck. It just has more wires than I actually need. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
It came with wiring instructions but the gauges are not even close to mine. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Sounds to me like: A) You bought the wrong gauges for your truck B) You bought the wrong harness for your truck A picture of the back of both gauges and the harness connections would be helpful to see.
I was looking for that Jim but you did such a good job at explaining I just left at that. Beside's, it's possible that OP's other cluster (one in the truck) is better on the back side and he hasn't removed it yet and noted where the wire's came from ?
I've tried to upload pics and it keeps giving me an error Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
But they are the right gauges. The harness from what I looked up is correct also. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
The tag thing helped with the fuel gauge because I can see where that tag was. But the battery one doesn't have the tag Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
The battery gauge is an ammeter, you might not want to use it if you added an alternator, and some other modern loads to the electrical system. If you connect the ammeter backwards, it will read backwards, and you can just switch the wires. The gas gauge, you want to wire correctly the first time.
