I have sparkplug wires (pretty new) that have plug connectors that slip on the threaded tip of a plug. Not intended to slip on the bulb tip that is standard nowadays. Last time I bought plugs, Autolites, they had the old style screw-off bulb tip. I tried to buy a set recently and every manufacturer carried by my auto parts store had permanently attached bulbs, no screw stud. Does anyone still make the old style? I hate 'new and improved' stuff. Guess I am getting old.
I think NGK still does for motorcycles but I don't know if they make it for your application. https://www.ngksparkplugs.com/
I have a set of Bosch Platinum's in my '72 Cheyenne's 350 that have those style tips. Might look in to a set of those, unless they've "upgraded" recently.
Some say NGK AP5FS is a good cross for Autolite 45, check your application and whether this will work for you. This pic shows a plug without a tapered seat, so I dunno, wish they didn't use one stock photo for every plug.
NGK had a plant next door to the BMW school in Culver City, CA. If they are still there, knowledgeable staff will help you. They can cross check any known spark plug manufacturer, and have listings for all makes & models. Plus, a long history of racing applications. Heat range and various electrode metals, etc. Impressive. Progressive. (in the positive vein)
This is true. I recently bought some plugs for a off topic vw Bosch brand and they have the screw top. Look into Bosch I guess for sure they may have em Sent from my Z981 using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I didn't realize the tips don't screw off anymore. Seems like things change and go away faster these days since all the electronic have taken over.
45 no longer equals a heat range, only means a "family" - reading modern plugs not the same as in the day - take a look at ngk.com
you are correct those are tapered. I am a Chrysler hemi man, this is my first deviation into Phord stuff!!
according to the NGK website , an autolite 45 crosses to WR5..stock # 2438 as oldtimer said if you look at the picture it has a screw on tip
also, can usually find NOS spark plugs on eBay - BF42 a common for 390, and others - but, need to locate info for your specific motor
NGK have the same plug under two different part numbers: one with solid tip, the other without. When I was selling them, I would either look at both, or remember common ones. But, I had (still have) the NGK catalogue, not a computer screen... Cosmo
that's all I need it to do; start easily and idle. Zero performance requirements. It is all about the look.
