I read that the stock track width of the Chevy II is approx 56".... so when I look for a straight axle, they measure from kingpin to kingpin... how do I translate this to final width with spindles and brakes?

I don't know the conversion factor, but a 48" axle should fit ok.

Gasser? Altered? Just refer to your build as a 60's era drag car and have fun and build it to suit your taste. The gasser , alter and modified production classes are long gone. If you build it using parts that reflect what they did in the 60's, events like melt down will welcome you with open arms and as long as your safety equipment meets the rules in the ET's your running so will any drag strip in the country. Cool project, Jim did not start with much more and has cruised cross country and raced hard and fast. I just call them awesome cars!!! Larry

Is that what you are running?

So can I have saddles welded on this drilled axle to run parallel leafs?

I would run one spring in the front with that axle.

I do see that he's running the single spring.... you think it would look silly to run parallel leafs?

The 57 is not a Chevy II, you know.

I think that's just the wrong axle for your car. But you could probably make it work, if you really want to.

I don't really know what your theme is for the car (or if you have one). If you want a drilled beam axle so it looks like an old match race car or similar, I'd suggest finding the axle from a Chevy van from the 60s. They had parallel leafs, and it would look more "right" under a Chevy II. It would take some work to drill it, and cost money to get it chromed.

  16. Jim is correct here that is not the correct axle for an AWB. Nothing wrong with it axle wise just not the correct axle for the build.

Everyone is going to hate me for this but they can just kiss my rebel dick. Anyway if it were my build I would be looking for a tube axle and let that drilled axle go to one of the trad hotrod guys. Just my thoughts on it.

These guys didn't get the memo that they had to run parallel leaf front ends to be correct. Build it the way u want. I'm pretty sure if u look hard enough u can find a chevy II from back in the day with a drilled I beam axle. They were using whatever they had back then.

The problem with those are they are dropped. I like this axle because it has the smile through it, and it has no drop...

If you run the Ford axle, use a transverse spring with it.

It's a neat car. Dropped tube axle...pretty common in those days! You can still get them made, you know

  22. Not hard to find new or old. The tube axle going under my A has never been under a car and was made in the early to mid '60s.

  23. If you want a transverse spring and radius rods, go for it.
But try to follow 2017 rules with regard to the scrub aspect ( that being that no suspension component shall be lower than the wheel rim, should a tire go flat)
This one looks dangerously close, but it's hard to tell.

Thanks for the tip! Hopefully I won't have that problem without a drop axle

I just don't want a drop.... I found some early tube axles that are curved just like the beam axle Im looking at... my grandpa says they are too weak though. Especially since I'll be pulling the wheels off the ground

Set some wheels and tires under it today. More than likely the same size I'll use.

Yikes it's gonna be close... I will have different tubs in it and I'll probably end up rolling the fender... I hope that will make for enough room...

I cut more of the floor out to prepare for the front half of the frame

I plan on running from the front sub frame straight back, bending up over the rear end (8 inches sooner than the factory frame), and then continuing back. Seems pretty simple?
