Was at a coffee run this morning talking with a buddy who is building a strong Y block and his engine builder says he is going to try and fit a (I think) 400 chev crank into the Y block?? Kinda like polluting an old ford putting in a chev crank though. Anyone have any info on this and what it achieves . Though he had a Y block crank they tried to straighten ,now he has two short ones!!

I had read somewhere that you can modify a 292 Y block crank to put in a 289 Ford....from what I can remember was a less expensive forged crank than a K code or something like that.

hey, if Kaase can build one with chevy heads...:p;)
The y-block crank in 289 thing was commonly used to do a steel offset ground stroker back in the sixties. I think they used to do a deal around 318 inches??

If the bore centers are not the same the mains won't spaced right.

Perhaps it's the forged chev crank that's an advantage. There were some forged y block ones but I think they are not too common.

I was trying an Allison in my 427 years ago , all worked great just couldn't find a short enough connecting rod . Damn the luck , I was hoping to have a big cube on the cheap !

Kaase welded up a set of Mummert heads, and used a Chevy manifold. IIRC, he used 40 lbs of rod to do that. If a Chevy crank would work, he would have done that too. Made good numbers, I think it was for sale for $17K when the EMC was over. I woulda bought it, but I wouldn't have enough left to cut a hole in the hood. LOL.

Old thread but the engine we are talking about has been built and is sitting assembled in the guys shop waiting to go in the car. He has a y block in the car currently that he is having to much fun with. He is planning on putting in the chev crank motor soon.

Not really a whole lot to say. I don't know the exact details but the guy we are talking about who is a mate of mine was having a hot Y block built.

The shop stroking the y-block cranks kept snapping them. So they went looking in the Manuals to see what would fit and don't quote me on this but I believe the crank they found that fit was a 400 chev crank.

All Ford 292 truck cranks are forged & desireable.

Ok .i will try to get hold of the guy and gets some pics , if he has any. Its going in a 29 Willys whippet which already has a y block in it. No it doesn't resemble a 29 Willys any more in case you were wondering.

OK maybe he said a 400 FORD crank it has the same bore space as a Y block at 4.38 .......... Now a small block chev has a bore space of 4.4. Maybe he just said 400 crank and common thought was GM not FOMOCO.

No problem if you have a block strecher.
