Technical Is anyone still using 4 speed transmissions?

Planning on using this Hurst shifter for the Nova.

 

Still r unning the Saginaw 4-speed that came in my 37 Ford pickup.

 

Volvo 4 speed going behind my ford banger in a 28 mopar

 

Same Muncie in both pics. Linkage was mocked up on the bench but I haven't cut the floor to make it fit yet so It's missing from the second pic. I haven't even pulled the side plate for inspection.

 

I've been a 4 speed guy since swapping out the Fenton shifted 3 speed in my 57 BelAir in high school with a T-10 in 1971. Replaced it with another that had been built for drag racing with a Ford input shaft.

64 Impala, converted oem 3 speed/tree with Muncie, also later Muncie with earlier side cover to use correct oem shifter.

This is the Richmond Super T-10 for my roadster.

 

BGII, my '31 Hiboy roadster runs a Ford Top Loader behind an SBC engine and they are mated with a McLeod safety bell housing. Those who know it will agree that it's an "In your face" hot rod, loud and obnoxious.
The '40 coupe runs a 5 speed behind SBF. She's sorta sedate and a cruiser.
Personalized tag on BGII reads "3 PEDLS" tag on '40 says "3PEDLS2"

 

Yep. Toploader behind the 312 Y-block in my '28 PU. Muncie behind the 327 SBC in my 32 Coupe.

 

All we had were 4 speeds back in the 60's and really that's all I need today in my 62 Impala 409 and a m-21 with Hurst shifter.

 

T-10 and a Hurst ramrod in my 38 Chevy Coupe. Saginaw 4 speed in my 65 ElCamino.

Been using a Saginaw with a Hurst Shifter since the 70's.

 

I use a Jeep 4 speed case & shifter (T-176) in my 32 Tudor sedan. I removed the goofy Jeep gears & replaced with Ford Toploader gears. Then I have a Gear Vendors OD behind that. Best of both worlds.

 

4 speeds have always been the tranny of choice for my own cars. I still like running thru the gears with a good Hurst shifter. A Hurst stick bolted to a 5 speed isn't the same.
Just got my latest project running last week, it's ot by a year (66 Nova) with a Sag in it, made me smile to slide the shifter into first for it's maiden run.

 

That shifter looks like it's backwards.

 

50 dollar saginaw in the Elcamino for 14 years, 80 dollar pick n pull saginaw in the Stude for 9 years, and a 50 dollar spare. Not cost effective to change, and more fun to bang shifts in.

My banger powered '29 cabriolet has a top loader F150 four speed but it is really a three w/OD, and is perfect for running that car on the interstate.

The last side shift four speed for me was my '57 bel air Tudor, 327 with a T10 and Hurst linkage, that was 1965-71. For that I kept two rear ends (4.11 and 3.26(?)) to swap out for going home from college or the other for driving locally or at the strip.

 

My favorite 4 speed I ever drove was a Borgward with 4 on the column.

OK, that was a lie but it hopefully will keep the thread going a bit longer.

1980 Super T10 - 3.42 first, with a quick change rear, can cruise or race. Not the strongest but car will be light and about 350 horse.

I too run a Volvo M40 gear box but behind a 304ci flatty. Unfortunately it couldn't handle the torque and ripped second gear out. So I've kept the housing and replaced the inards with straight cut close ratio gear sets. Works fine now.

Don't ya mean a 48 Chrysler 4 spd on the column M5 4 spd semi auto with a new fangled fluid drive.

Running a muncie in my gasser with an old hurst ram rod shifter! Still get a thrill banging the gears!

 

Yup. Taken early in the mock-up stage, but going to use it when done in the '53 . Super T-10.

 

All mine have them.
