I got this Chevy II from a man in Tulsa Oklahoma. We drug it home probably 6 months ago. Finally decided to pull it into the shop today and start tearing it apart. There are no floors in it due to rust. It needs rear quarters bad, but that all can be fixed. It's gonna get a straight axle with a Ford 9 inch, and a 400 SBC. Today I got the front clip pulled, I have good sheet metal for the front clip.

Looks like it may take alittle elbow grease but the end product will be well worth it!

 

Well, the trunk looks a little drafty! A vote here to shove the rear axle forward oh, 8'' should do it.
Great project.

 

I like the little, boxy, 62-65 Nova's/Chevy II's; you've got your work cut out for you. I would't have thought an Oklahoma car would have had that much rust. Follow squirrels' and White Noise builds for ideas; there are a few more here on the HAMB also. Good luck. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.

 

Just a simple Q? Is it going to be an AWB, or a Gasser? 4 lugger.....63 i'm thinking.....
but , with zero trim, and a sedan, possibly a 62. enlighten us a lil.......

 

Looks like it will be a very early funny car STYLE Nova . Should be fun , either way !

 

A pile of sheet metal, a couple of large rolls of mig wire, and a large bottle or 2 of argon, and it's off to the races!

Can't an altered wheel base be a gasser? And it's a '62 or so I was told. No title. I plan on moving the rear axle about 8 inches and the front axles around 2 inches. I did look at squirrels build and it was very inspiring when it came to my mental planning. Have any of you seen the Clark speed special? John clark's altered Chevy II? I see his car a lot and I crawl under and around it every chance I get to take mental notes

Yeah, I saw John at the Meltdowns 2015.

Gasser class did not allow altered wheelbase cars like mine. Look up the rules, if you want to learn the history...

Alter the wheelbase and you have an Altered. Not a Gasser.

 

If you build a car like mine, you have a match racer....don't fit in any class.

 

Doc, The AWB cars are the descendants of the Funny Car.
A straight axle is not what makes a car a gasser , (Gas Coupe and Sedan)
I'm not sure whether you knew that.

I thought gassers had the front end raised to help with weight transfer, and an altered just took that concept to the next level... guess I should do some more studying

Man it looks like you had better get some bracing in there to hold what left of it.

 

The raised front end was not something that was specific to Gas class cars. It was the way to get more weight transfer, and was used in other classes, as well.

The altered wheelbase thing was a wild idea to get even more weight on the rear tires, and it didn't take long for the rule makers to ban it in just about all classes. But the cars put on a good show, so they ended up in match races in many cases. I don't know nearly as much of the history of this as several other folks here...if you do some research, you can find a lot written on the subject.

Of course, to most folks today, the history is not important...what is important is how neat the cars look, and how fun they are to race

Well it could be a Gas Altered as opposed to a Fuel Altered.

But it is not likely that they would have allowed it to run in altered class either, most likely as Jim ( @squirrel ) says a match bash car. I am not an expert but I am not sure that Novas ( chevy IIs ) ran I AWB class.

never the less they are fun and fun is what its all about right?

 

I plan on building the frame out of 2x3... does anyone have an opinion on what gauge I should use? I plan on setting down inside the original subframe, and sliding it forward into the pockets shown in the last picture and welding it in.

I'm not going to do any more rust removal from the Fire wall until I get it braced up a bit

Man that's an ambitious project, good luck with it.

 

Well I plan on putting aluminum floors in it, and I have to do frame work anyways, and quarters aren't the most difficult thing.... maybe all the rust saved me time cutting

Sub frame is cleaning up nicely... I cut these end pieces out so my new frame rails can sit down in there.
