I also made this cool paint layer shifter knob, it took me 6 months to make!

So I started with a shifter knob and put it in a drill to grind it down to a desired shape. View attachment 3386853 View attachment 3386855 View attachment 3386856 So now that I had the shape I wanted I'm ready to start painting, I first apply an adhesion promoter for the first coat. So there's a few things to know when making a paint layer shift knob. First: every time I paint a car I would apply one coat to the knob. If you don't paint cars for a living it can be rather expensive buying so many different colors.

Second: Be sure to only dust on the paint if you go on to heavy you're most likely going to get fry-ups. I would suggest painting no more than once a day.

Third: It took me 6 months of painting at least three times a week before I felt there was enough layers to start sanding.

 

Once you have enough layers of paint I put it in the drill again and started sanding with 400 grit to reveal the paint layers once I was happy with the look I was going for I finished it off with 1500 grit. Then I apply one coat of clear each day for about a little over a week lightly sanding with 1500 grit between coats to build up the clear in total there's close to ten coats of clear on the finished knob.

Looks just like the layers of paint the racks I use in the paint booth. I have always liked the multi layered look. Frank

 

Sorry I haven't done a update on my truck in some time, just know that I am still working on it and I'm glad to say its nearing completion. I'm taking it to the Round-Up in a few weeks so I'll do a big update shortly after the show! Then I'll start a new thread (Rob Bobs 32 truck "after the build" ) it will mostly consist of little road trips I plan on taking in my truck, and hopefully the start of a new build that I have in mind. I probably shouldn't do this but I've seen the finished pictures of Rob's PU and it is killer. You will be in for a treat at the roundup and when he debuts it here on the HAMB!

So as promised I have an update. I'm going to call this update "the good, the bad and the ugly"

The good: I got my truck together for the LSRU, I started the week off with the pre round up party at my good friend Bob Owens shop in Wellington Tx, I know most everyone on the HAMB knows Flat Top Bob he's a stand out guy who is very passionate about hot rods and the hot rod community. I live about two hours from Wellington and as much as I wanted to drive my truck to his place I made the decision to trailer it most of the way then drive it in to his shop. However I did drive it about 40 miles in the rain with no problems. here it is in the ditch before the rain started. I would also like to note the day before was beautiful clear sky's as well as the day after the party, so guess I'm lucky the one day I got my black 32 out of the shop it decided to dump rain, but no big deal I'm sure it's going to be drive in the rain in the future.

 

Made it to Bob's shop! I was greeted by everyone at the shop eager to see my truck.

 

As always I had a great time talking with everyone and looking at Bobs great collection! Glad to know I'm not the only one who saves 32 tickets from Braums.

 

Saw your Truck At the Round Up What a Great Build you did. Its pretty cool after reading your progress and finally seeing in person.Great Job!!

 

So I left the next day I left for Austin my friend lives down there so it was nice to have a place to stay and hang out. Most of Thursday was spent cleaning my truck since it had been rained on I had to hit it with the orbital buffer and some polish. That only took a few hours to do so the rest of the day was spent hanging out and relaxing by the pool.

 

I would hardly call us friends, haha. I can tell that's is a reflection of David in the paint but what part of you truck is that reflecting off of?

Later that evening we got the truck out and went for a drive over to the Domain then to Top Notch and finished up the night hitting some balls at Top Golf.
