I have a 41 Suburban and I would like to put in a T-5 trans and change the rear. I have a 2000 S-10 pickup but the info I have seen doesn't include S-10's that are that new. Is there a reason? I haven't gotten into this yet - just gathering info and parts. Thanks! Jim
Just an Idea why I couldn't use the tranny from the 2000 S10. What would be the reason. Is it a bolt pattern question or something else...
There are a lot more well-versed HAMBers on T-5s than me but I suspect the gear ratios are not the greatest and that yours may not be a "World Class" T-5. You also have to deal with the electronic speedometer in the later T-5s (assuming you want to use mechanical in your 41'). - EM
Yup, that is not a T5. That's why there is no info. If you do find a T5 made after 1993, irrespective of what vehicle you pulled it from, it will have the FORD bellhousing pattern, even if it came from a GM vehicle. 1993-on, with the Ford pattern are World Class, have a 4.03:1 first gear, and have an electronic speedometer drive.
I wouldn't touch a T5 out of an S10 too fragile for anything. Come to think of it there's nothing out of an S10 I'd use on anything. Gary
Not true. I have used them on 265's and 283's. All three still on the road, customers still happy. Number four will be on the road shortly: I had one in my Falcon for several years, too. Real experience. No issues.
You're entitled to an opinion, but lots of guys are running them successfully, hence the popularity. My opinion is that the 4.03:1 gearset units are only "fragile" because the lower first gear has greater torque multiplication which puts the cases in danger of cracking. I understand that most of us want a "bolt-in" solution, but for the creative types these transmissions can have many different gearset and input shaft swaps to satisfy all needs.
Hey guys, your cars, your money, and your choice. I've been using T5 WC five speeds out of 90,91 Camaro's behind modified 327's and 350's. Their low first gear will light up the tires and run 1900 RPM's at 75 MPH in fifth gear. Much better then a dinky unit built for micro motors found in an S10. I just don't see all this fascination with any S10 parts. In my estimation its all junk. I always chuckle when I read HAMB threads on someone wanting to use an S10 chassis for a rod build. Are S10's really that good? I'm just wondering how customers can be so happy with S10 junk when there are so many better choices out there. Gary
28 Chevy, a 2000 S10 never came with a Tremec 5 speed. As bonzo-1 posted they came with an New Venture 3500. Like I've previously posted I use 90-91 Camaro Tremec World Class 5 speeds that bolt to stock Chevy bell housings. Why use S 10 junk when you don't have to? Gary
All this bickering and we don't even know what the T5 was being mated to. You can't assume it was a high performance application.
Sorry, Nooooooooooo high performance here. A 216 in a '41 chevy suburban. Could prob use something with a rubber band. Will keep looking for one from an earlier GM
It doesn't matter what an S10 T5 is mated to. They are worthless garbage that can't be used on any type of performance engine. The only reason anyone would build a car using one is the extremely low purchase price. Gary
I put an NV 3500 behind a 305 and have put over 40,000 trouble free miles on it. No problems what so ever. It is however, driven by a mature adult, and not abused at all. No idea what would happen I if brought it up to 4 grand and slipped my foot off the clutch. 5th gear is a very "mild" overdrive and I've got 3.23's and 28" tall tires.
However.......the tailshaft on the S 10 T5's may get your shifter location closer to where you want it. The shifter location on the F bodies (world class) transmissions are pretty far back. If I remember correctly,I think I measured about a 10" difference between the 2 tailshafts. At least thats what Im using on my '36 coupe.....probably a couple pictures of its' location if you click on my '36 build thread.
A) easy to change with "junk S10" parts? I don't have to buy anymore parts to change mine, it's already in the right spot. B) does it have to be Chevy pattern? Gimpy already mentioned that fact. I'm making my own adapter for a different application. Plus there are plenty of Ford pattern adapters out there already.
Ok, So found a '88 GMC S-15, 4WD, 5 speed. Am I getting closer? Is that a possibility before I get under it? The price is REALLY right!
You're getting colder, unless you want to adapt it to a closed drive system, which is a whole 'nuther can of worms. The 4wd trans mates to a transfer case instead of a tailshaft.
Your cars, your money, your choice. My point simply is there's nothing on a Chevrolet S10 I'd use on one of my builds. They were built and sold as a low level economy vehicle with little or nothing usable for other makes or projects. Gary
