Hot Rods I need ideas for a column drop

I like this over what you can buy.

 

I've got a chrome mount that will bolt to the angled bracket attached to the bottom of the dash. It's exactly the same as the one you have now but it's about 1" shorter.

It will bolt right up in 5 mins. Let me know if you want it.

 

I've been eyeing the Borgeson recessed drop to replace a similar drop in my 37. The open one is kinda nice looking too.

Before making any decision. It's best to remove all mounts and be sure of the exact placement of the column position. As mentioned. You may have other issues to deal with.

Make a new one out of 3/4" thick aluminum. Shorten the height and split on the column center line to bolt up from the bottom. Grind the top to the angle and shape of the dash and bolt it from the top.

Had to move the column up into the bottom of the dash so used a muffler clamp with some formed 18g tin welded to it to pretty things up.

 

A model A engine connecting rod with out the babbit fit the column in my roadster. Then cut to fit. Mine is covered by the dash so that cool part does not show. Gary

 

Made mine from a con rod out of a 60hp flathead. Not sure of opening size.

 

Flathead connecting rod. Since this photo, I moved the drop back (to the new steel brace behind the dash), and up, moving the column, and the wheel towards the dash, and up. A dozen guys here can tell you the ID of the rod, but it's the same as the T'bird column.

 

I used an old SBC LJ ally rod on an early Falcon column.. works ok

 

mine's definetely different alright.....an old lug wrench cut down, heated and bent to fit my offset, slanted needs.

I've made several others since that one. The shaft collars work great if you don't have a mill or lathe to make certain parts, and you can carve away on them a little to clean them up. I've used them for uppers and lowers.

 

I'd be inclined to build a copy of the Ididit Old school column drop in whatever size you need Danny. With a little thought you could make it split for easy installation to the column rather than un-split like this example .
They are designed to be used for the small diameter Ididit old school column and I'm using one in my RPU.
I like the clean simple design.

 

I j 76 dodge rv, jamboree , used the same colunm and it fit real well. Unfortunately i dont have a picture of it assembled. Column is 2 1/4 "

 

I have used a aluminum big block rod in several cars i have built i have one in my willys coupe im doing Depending on the column size you us either end

 

Hell of a good idea

 

The carpenter in me says take that mount apart and make a test piece out of plywood that fits your needs, then drill the new hole and trim the excess aluminum off. Bob

I used a 327 small journal rod with the bearing, worked great. Like others have said, I think you can work with what you have.

I made a cover over my homemade steering column bracket in the style of the dashboard.

 

This is a Model A, had to come up with something to cover the wiring out of the column. So I made a cover over the original column drop.

 

That drop along with the dash extension looks nice,it has a Zephyr look to it. HRP

 

F-350Loui, where did you get the speedometer/multi-gauge set-up is that an after market piece? If so who makes it? If it is not aftermarket , where did you find it / what vehicle did it come from? It is similar to what I had in mind for my roadster project. I was not thinking of a console, but the one you made is VERY nice. any information you could share would be appreciated. Thank You.----Jim
