  1. I still dig the Buick Straight 8. This is either Pete Shadinger, or Ringer & Saunders, I cannot recall which!

  2. That last batch of shots from the '61 Nationals seemed to stir up a bit of information. Here's a few more for you to chew on...

  3. I would SO like to hear this car making a pass! And that straight 8 Buick too!

A few from Lakeland (or early Lake Land) drag strip

Famous racer Bo Laws makes a hard launch at Lakeland during a big NHRA World Championship event. Lakeland changed its name to Shelby County International Raceway.

Like most drag strips in the south, Lakeland started small. It was essentially a strip of pavement with a small timing tower and very few amenities. Note sign says Lake Land Memphis Tenn.

The Coleman-Taylor Automatic Transmissions dragster is seen here blazing the tires at Lake Land Dragway. The blown and injected small-block Chevy motivated the short-wheelbase dragster during the early 1960s.

The Sock It To Me! big-block injected altered is seen here, rolling into the staging beams at Lakeland International Raceway.

This beautiful shot of the Shreve Automotive AAFD dragster seems to really set the mood for the late 1960s drag racing scene. The blown nitro Hemi is belching out flames as it rolls into the beams at the now named Shelby County Intertnational.

(I actually attended a few races here as a spectator while going to a USMC electronics school in near by Millington Tenn.)

I wonder how many of the Dragmaster frames were built as you sure do see a lot of them in the early 60's pics

Stephens and Venables. The Venables part being current Matt Hagan funny car crew chief Dickie's dad. Judging by the bare tin aft of the motor plate this shot is most likely after the clutch explosion that trashed the original panels.

The end of the shut-down area looks a lot safer than a sand trap.

OK…. A little help here…. How is fuel being delivered to engine…. I don’t see any injector nozzles or carburetor, how’s it getting in the engine?

Probably uses suck through carbs on the inlet side of the blowers.

This appears to be the Butters and Gerard fueller that was usually driven by either Dave Hage or Fred Farndon but the lettering on the visor appears to say "Clancy" and the only Clancy that I have been able to find is Mike who drove a junior fueller. I will try to contact Dave Gerard and ask him for clarification.

The mystery deepens. I just found this photo elsewhere and it lists Chuck Kurzawa as the driver (and all the other pix that I found of him also showed him in a plain white helmet as well). Chuck was a welder at Logghe Stamping and may have put this car together there.

Is that some kind of injector pump at the base of the mags?

  23. Looks like injectors on the inlet side of the blowers.

    That's what I would guess.
If it had carbs I don't think the driver would in the car with a helmet on.

  26. Man! I am so busted! There's no denying it, that might have been me behind the wheel. Or it might be one of the other two partners in the Murf, Burn & Luigi Racing Team. This shot is from the Wayne Trail/Van Wert Dragway. But I have no idea who Billy Northup is. It was usually me behind the camera if I wasn't behind the wheel.

It's a '68 340 Formula S 'Cuda. I think I've seen maybe only one other Formula S convertible. This car is sitting under cover in the back of a friend's shop and might be put back in street trim some day. It wasn't a world-beater but it was a ball to drive on the street!

Just posted on George Klass's site, pretty sure that this is Caddo Mills, TX, and the channeled coupe near side is Don Breithaupt, before the red paint and the blown Chevy with long injector tubes. Don would go to compete successfully at many a national event. Not sure who is on the far side. Caddo Mills was on one strip of a triangle-shaped airfield, it is still there.

Another from the Klass collection, Wayne Ferguson's "Satisfaction, blown gas Olds...pretty sure this was taken at Colton. Colton had few amenities, and a really short shut-off, but it was still fun to race there....thanks, George, for continually adding to this great collection!!

Bill Hopper's blown Chrysler powered gas altered, think he was from Tempe. He was an in-state rival to Carl Grimes and his Buick powered altered...remember how the crowds rushed to the starting line to watch them race at Henderson, NV, April '59.
