I recently bought a 34 5w old hotrod that was turned into a drag car in the early 60's. It runs an early long bell housing 331 (numbers suggest 52/53) with 51/52 heads with 1 3/4" inlet valves. Stock rocker gear and adjustable pushrods. I haven't got as far as cam yet but followers are flat faced.
Pistons are domed in the centre with pockets for the valves (not stock?)
I'm new to hemi's so need a bit of guidance on this set up it's all old tech but will it function ok in a street car ?
That's the stuff I know about, it also comes with various bolt ons and dress I need to identify and to know if it's functional.
    Here are the pics
    Pistons
    Flywheel is this stock ?
Long bellhousing to cad lasalle any idea on manufacturer?
Larsen front cover and valley cover, has no pocket for the water pump is this a boat piece?
Nicson neovane is this a water pump or fuel? Where does it drive from (slot in the back(
Random remote water pump is this anything to do with this engine ?
    Any ideas

Few more pics to follow shortly

Wow, nice fi d! Looking at those pistons, I would estimate they are 12:1 or more. I would cc the dome volume and the combustion chamber volume, then calculate the compression ratio. I don't see a reason not to run them.

  10. Nice score! Never heard of the front cover or valley cover maker, maybe boat stuff. The valve springs aren't stock, as the originals were wound in the same direction inner and outer.

The pictures look good! That is an awesome looking car. If it were mine I would be sorely tempted to remove those rear fenders... It is hard to tell in the photo of it back in the 60's if the rear fenders were on it then. Good luck in figuring everything out, and really enjoy the car!

The valve covers look like the O'brien truckers. Nicson made lots of boat stuff (not saying that's what that is). And the valvesprings look like single's with a dampener, not doubles in that picture. Not sure how much that helps though, sorry

The Nicson pump is a marine part. I have the exact same water pump on my Rayson craft flat bottom drag boat. The Nicson portion is just the water diverter and the pump is a neovane. the pump has a rubber impeller. Also it is hard to tell by the photos but it looks like there is no friction material on the flywheel for the clutch disc to ride on. if it is indeed all aluminum as it appears these were made for boats as there were no clutch discs used

Cheers on the nicson! The friction face is rivetted on the other side, loaded the wrong photo, I have the cover plate and friction. Cover type is a "long" clutch almost identical to what I use in post war bentleys, friction material is full of copper is this a drag part ?
    Any ideas on the larson?

I think the friction material is sintered bronze? not sure. It was an aftermarket lightweight flywheel. there were several different mfgrs. I have a Schiefer alum flywheel on my 40 ford with a 331 caddy motor. As far as the larson part. I have never heard of it but it is more than likely marine also. does the neovane pump bolt up to it? I think marine water pumps are held on w 3 bolts while Mechanical fuel injection pumps are 4 bolt

Nicson doesn't bolt directly to the Larson, larson has 3 bolts to fix a pump but the cavity is open to oil ?

The pumps were driven by a spud off the front of the camshaft

Here's a pic of the pump and the drive spud. I guess I was wrong the pump has 4 bolts. Must be the Fuel inj pump that has 3

That's the same as mine which I'd guess was a water pump because of connections. I missing the drive part but won't use it anyway

    Other side of flywheel

I was told this was Packard can anyone be more specific ?

Any ideas on the wheel ?

Popped the engine and trans I'm still have the original headers and valve covers have been dimpled clearance
