Hot Rods wire wheels 17 inch

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Hot Rod Ron, Jun 28, 2016.

  1. So I would like to see pics and tire sizes of what you guys are running on 17 inch wire wheels. I have a chance to buy some really nice 17 inch by 3 1/2 that have been restored.

This photo shows my RPU with 6.50X17 Firestone rears and 4.50X17 Excelsior front tires. I have since gone with 5.25X17 Firestones on the front replacing the Excelsiors which wore horribly. The Firestone tires are a couple of inches taller but still provide a reasonable rubber rake. Unfortunately I don't have a good profile shot with the taller front tires.

    Sorry, can't help.
    They can look good, but
Rim width too narrow for me, so I sold mine.
I don't like the way the tyres 'balloon' out, as in the Model A in post 5.

  8. I gotta agree there actually. I'm not in love with them either. But the rear tires were free so I run them for now. I'm probably gonna change this thing to 16's and solids when it needs tires again. Those rear tires are almost 600 dollars a pair.

Maybe a little OT, But am I the only one who wouldn't feel safe rolling down the highway on 80 year old wire wheels?? I am assuming you are talking about oem wheels, not repops.

Been running 1935 16" wires on several cars with no issues. All of my cars are banger powered and weigh in about 1800 - 2300 pounds. It's been my experience that you need at least a dozen wire wheels to get four good ones.

We had same concerns so we put a 6mm. (1/4") shaped stiffening plate on the back.painted it black, (wheels are red), - don't even notice it.
Made the wheels heavy, - didn't help unsprung weight, but I feel safer.
After seeing all the cars on here with wire wheels, I can't help thinking that it is overkill.
