Iam simply saying. When I was in machine repair or "Millwright" one of the A guys went nuts if you talked about your cars "motor" Motors are what runs the machines in here,GET IT RIGHT. He was a baseball fan and we told him when we race our cars it takes two balls to do it,usually shut him up

Depends on how old you or the car are. The Hogs Head was first used to describe a Model T Ford transmission cover. Bob DSCF6947.JPG

I'm 69 and still learning things on here. Learned about "dizzy" and "carby" about the same time that I learned an old Volvo V8 was considered a traditional hotrod engine.

One more. When in the hell were small hub caps designated to be "dog dishes". We put the small caps on every chrome wheel we ever had in the 60's and I never heard it. Baby moons yes. Also in the 60's it was typical for a " surf wagon" to have black walls, white painted steel wheels, and baby moons if they fit or the stock small caps. 1960 Fords were the best....

One more on this engine/motor deal...... If it's not an engine why are there COE's and not COM's . Seems like the truck manufacturers knew what they where.

Always been the engine and motor thing. Went in the Air Force in 1961 and was assigned to piston engine school. Instructor made big deal out of engine thing. Explanation was engine made power from fuel, air mix, motor was supplied with outside electric power. Always interchangeable though. We called ourselves "big motor men". Still working in jet engine shop now.
Once heard a guy ask what the difference was between motor and engine, when a group came through on a shop tour. One of group answered that a motor was ordinary like in your car but a jet engine was just " crammed full of technology ". Good as any

Magnetos are mags because of magnetism, not magnesium.

This has always been the issue with John Q Public regarding the car world.
Mostly, the two segments have been worlds apart, it's all in where the sensibilities of the owner lies. I think (one of) the reasons I've never been very attracted to customs is because what lies under the chrome valve covers and air cleaner is (usually) pretty uninspiring from a hot rodders point of view.
Now on the other hand I warm up when a custom guy builds what I call an old school "hybrid", more of a mild custom with horespower and MAG wheels.
I recall a gray 50 (ish) Ford from the SEMA show that covered both worlds.
For me, that era of Fords never did much for me but that car really worked.

I thought that was unique to my dad!

The first time I remember him calling them that was when I was about 12. We were actually trying to prime a shallow well water pump. I was the tool-hander. I just figured he had blurted out the name and it stuck.

Wow! I'm 50 years old now. All that time I didn't know that was a popular name for them.

Only spoke wheels have rims, everything else is a "wheel".

So, if you sling your third member in a catapult, it's still punkin chunkin?

As S55MERCURY66 says, "hubcaps" are either full wheel covers or "dog-dish" caps.
That last picture you show is NOT a hubcap, it is known as a "DUST CAP".
