I am waiting on a tool and a tooling quote so I can take it further for the builder/finish machinist. This will help in application to production from here out. I'm also waiting to hear back from 2 suppliers about a more modern thrust bearing for the insert guys (aluminum has to be inserted). I haven't moved the block from the fixture so I can do additional machining towards final status. Holidays seem to be killing communications.

3.jpg The first new aluminum and iron Thomas heads through first OP, which is just the top. I am changing my machining process since the tooling I made actually has machine stock on the deck side. I need to put the spark plug holes in as 2nd OP now and then machine the deck side. The aluminum pictured does not have the plug holes yet but the iron does.

20170217_152316.jpg 20170217_152338.jpg Second aluminum Winfield. Spark plug holes not put in so that if someone wants a certain plug I can custom machine whichever one is needed.

Hi I really like the look of the iron Thomas head! Any idea when it will be commercially available?

I'm trying to get castings right now to fill the dozen or so orders of interested customers.

OK, here is the second aluminum block cast with filed in 2nd and 4th main journals. The production versions will be far nicer. This one is an experiment to see what would happen. Not perfect, but it will machine up and be buildable.

I'm considering finding several investors interested in helping get a small, dedicated foundry operation going. This may also be expanded into interest in my Model A block project and heads, and upcoming V8 flathead block project. For now, though, I would stick with the prospects of buying into just the foundry end. If I can get several dozen people interested, I would look further into a suitable building to lease, and the necessary equipment. Return on investment will be ...a percentage of every block and head cast at the facility and sold to my machining company.

My reasons for wanting to do this are mainly, total control of all aspects of casting production, getting closer to my machine shop, and keeping invoice payments tied to sales of machined product.

I am wanting to wade into printed core technology more than I am already and cast almost the entire A block in printed sand. This will eliminate most grinding and many of the headaches of the mold assembly process. I intend that the increased cost of external printed sand will be offset by decreased casting finish time, my time having to drive to foundries to assemble molds, take back product to be ground on by me personally, and the natural delays of not being the only, or biggest customer of any foundry.

I will post this on as many Facebook pages as I can for as wide a coverage as I can get.

That was interesting, even though I didn't really get all that was happening. I wish they would have shown a little more of what transpired between the very rough casting they broke out of the sand and the beautiful finished product, though.

I think the roughness you saw was the loose sand clinging to the product and once it was blown/brushed away the clean core was left.

I've been using this technology for a couple of years already. I am moving forward to get as much of my work done this way to take the idiotic problems away that come from lack of skill foundries face in the current drug addled and lazy workforce. If someone can invent a casting grinding machine, things will be golden!

Hi....The technology to day is mind blowing... I use to make small parts for European 20-30s cars that we not available any more back in the late 50's......making the molds for the sand boxs was a nite mare..would through out 7 out of 10 full of air holes..what they do to day with the printers is amazing...
