So what happened was....Palmer offered to supply the pace cars "If they'd let him drive" as you can see they did. Unknown to him they removed the brake point poles that he had practiced with and got to the end of pit row and well...Chris Shankle and Tony Hulman are actually in the back seat, he took out a yellow shirt sending him up and over the car, breaking his leg just before hitting this hay wagon covered in photographers that was to be removed shortly after the start of the race. That's the story as I know it......

Here's what the original poster said about this one. The first pic is missing..."Twin-engine Porsches created by Lou Fageol, whose father Frank founded the Twin Coach Company in 1927 to develop a large capacity dual-engine bus to challenge street cars for city transit. In addition to considerable success as pilot of Gold Cup hydroplanes Slo-Mo-Shun IV and V, Lou built a dual Offy powered Fageol Twin Special that started the 1946 Indy 500 from the middle of the front row. His double engine obsession continued with the Fageol Twin Porsches. Top photo shows the original car with 356 coupe body and '51-2 Packard grille (and tail lights?) in early August 1953 @ Paine Field in Everett, Washington, during SCCA races held as part of the annual Seattle Seafair celebration. Lower photo from Don Zipfel via Hemmings @ Pebble Beach April 1955 shows a more radical second car, constructed from airplane drop tanks on a box channel frame with Porsche suspension bits."

Hakro....I agree it looks like a Saab Sonett II, but it doesn't have that wrap-around windshield, and the rear fenders don't have that Sunbeam styled elongated elongated rear fender look that the photograph has...the rear of the door design near the door handle isn't the same either.....I'm wondering if they made the car ''earlier'' and used those aspects in earlier years instead of the usual shown in this photo???

Thanks, Rootie, for a great photo of Lloyd Ruby in 1962. And notice that he is wearing tall lace up boxer/wrestler type shoes. Before Nomex came out those were the preferred shoe for racing for many drivers.

Isn't this car number 4 also the same as the "mystery" car you are trying to identify in that previous post?

Yes, this is like the Dailmer P250 that was discussed earlier. These had a 2 1/2 liter V-8 which evidently was designed to be attractive to the American market. Evidently it was a fairly quick automobile.

No, then mystery car ain't a Daimler. It's much more clumsy and low numbers production about it.

The Diamler didn't have a good reputation. Sort of like you are saying. It was very flexible, even to the point that doors came open while driving. The fins were an addition after the first design came out. Again for the U.S. market, or so they thought.

After starting the Indy 500 the driver came down pit road and crashed. They practiced several times and had made a mark on the pit wall where he was to start braking so as to get stopped by the end of pit road. Well someone removed the mark on race day and he braked too late and lost control of the car.

Early Seattle "regraded" many of the city's hills by fire hosing the soil down into Elliot Bay
