Sorry I don't know much about this little badass 4 banger. Mickey Thompson had some hemi heads cast for Pontiacs in 61/62ish I think the 392 hemis had the same bore spacing as the Pontiacs so it was an easy switch to make them work on the Pontiacs.

Been searching for a set since I started down the path of a Nailhead powered Hot Rod. Missed an opportunity to buy a set by an hour online last year, not any bidding site, but a general hot rod reposting parts type of deal. Finally, after seven years of searching, this pair came up for sale and I was able to grab them.

    Hello,
This photo was taken in October, 1960 at Lions Dragstrip. It is an SBC with a 671 and 6 Strombergs on top. This motor belonged to Bones Balogh for his Gasser sedan. Later on in 1960-61, he set many records in the gas classes. It is an exact replica look of our motor that we built back in June-July of 1960 and later, ran it in our 40 Willys July/August. Our motor was a 283 punched out to 292, Jahns Pistons, ported and polished heads, Howard Cam and lifter kit, Joe Hunt Vertex Magneto, Reath modified 671, Edlebrock / Weiand blower manifold and Isky Gilmer kit, Hedman Headers, and those ever popular finned aluminum valve covers with Moon breathers.

The motor was originally built with just the 6 Strombergs on the 283 and ran in B/Gas from May until June. Then we took it out to upgrade it with other go fast stuff to be more competitive in B/Gas. Our times dictated that we were more competitive in C/Gas, so a little weight was welded in the trunk over the rear tires. That made the trunk more rigid and gave us the added weight to drop down to C/Gas, where our beginning times were close to the top speed and E.T. of the class champion. Besides, did we want to just get started with the Willys and go against Pittman, Cook, and Thompson all in the same meets? That would have been tremendously daunting and depressing at the same time for us "backyard newbies." So, C/Gas it was until we won and crashed to end the new build/races.

During the recovery time from the accident at Lions, (In 1961,) someone from the Midwest bought our motor and had it shipped back there. Past historical memories, anyone? Stories from Grandpa or relatives?

    Update to my collection.

Scored a set of vintage Holmes Mfg. valve covers as sold by Moon.
I'm not too versed on these and am trying to figure out if the mounting holes are larger and tapered on purpose or if they were wallowed out by a previous owner. Can anyone in the know clue me in? Did these have special tapered bolts, rubber/cork washers...or were they just finger banged over time?

Hi Canuck, what are the headers that you are running on your 425? Your engine looks great.

1960's 283 Valve cover with 5 LED Lamps inside. Full width Diffuser. Works great.
