When you travelled from Detroit to Delaware (and back again) in 1931, you had to stop and stay places along the way, tourist homes. Roads were 'interesting' as well. 18093752323_6b98eec841_o.jpg 18709582592_311843fe1b_o.jpg 18709588222_68eb71f14b_o.jpg 18716806411_7f424c3567_o.jpg 18716806701_40e661c392_o.jpg 18716815271_7a30fcf9b3_o.jpg

Scan-b_0005.jpg A few of my own 'rides', the 1959 Austin Healey 3000 was a mistake to have in New York (Rockland County) as I had to bring the battery in every night on cold winter nights. (I was a college student from Michigan) The foam seats would suck in moisture and would be blocks of ice in the morning. The heater and defroster were built to 'English weather' standards. And I lost the front right tire twice, those 'knock-off' spinners really did need to be checked often!
The grandson of the original owner (I was #2- 29,000 miles, original Dunlaps still on it, hardtop, soft top and tonneau cover included, $400) I bought the 1962 Jag with chrome wire wheels from an airplane mechanic, he couldn't get it running- $185 and a rather easy fix. The Healey up on jack stands was in Florida- made the mistake of letting a friend drive it without instructions about first gear NOT being syncro, just get it moving in first! Ground it up- learned a LOT about those trannies- and how they'd change the couplings everyone once in awhile, a real trick getting them to match!

Grandpa was a chauffeur, mechanic and delivery driver for Charles Gauss, a tobacconist in Detroit. He was informed of his hiring by letter. Any ideas on the make and year of the delivery van?
Mr. Gauss had an amazing history. He made some very shrewd investments in real estate, buying some farm land near the River Rouge. When Mr. Ford wanted to build his second large factory after Highland Park, guess where he wanted to build? Yeah, Mr. Gauss came into a lot of money for his time. He donated over $400,000 to build a church in Detroit. chauffeur-1.jpg gauss grandpa driving.jpg gauss.jpg gauss-tele.jpg dishwaster.jpg gauss trinity lutheran.jpg

Yes, they are all from my collection, I bought them for years before they became ridiculously expensive on Ebay. I have a particularly long and sick relationship with old Car Culture images.

What are the chances of seeing TWO 1959 Plymouth station wagons in the same picrure?

Yes, an interesting picture. It was described as a "craneway". I looked at it and could see how it works. all the little balconys are offset from each other, so the gantry crane (visible in the pic) could raise goods from the ground level and deposit them to whichever balcony is closest to where it would be needed.

    Clever stuff.

My '72 Wagon rusted out around the windows, My '74 Wagon rusted out in the lower regions. We, my brother and I, had a buncha Vegas, cause they was cheap and plenty. SBlk V-8's fit well with Monza parts.

Here are some slides from my collection of old photos. I'll start with 5 that were taken in the older section of Gaithersburg, Maryland, about a mile from my house. IMG_8943.JPG IMG_8944.JPG IMG_8954.JPG IMG_8955.JPG IMG_8956.JPG

I put the last two of this group on the Friday art show a couple weeks ago, because I thought they were cool artistic shots. IMG_8892.JPG IMG_8893.JPG IMG_8894.JPG IMG_8895.JPG IMG_8899.JPG
