Hot Rods If you could pick a car that epitomizes the word "Hot Rod" what one car fits that bill?

judging by the photos I would say that for the most part real HOT RODS don't have fenders.:)

For me it's the Graffiti Coupe......not for what it is, but for what it represented. As a teenager in 1970's London, UK, I didn't even know what a hot rod was until seeing Graffiti, and I just thought it, and the cruise culture of that time was just the coolest thing on the planet.......and some 40+ years later, I'm finally getting close to realising that teenage dream of owning one.

Damn Bad-Ass and yet achievable at the same time- not one piece of 'unobtainium' on the car- yet the overall combination of seemingly normal parts- screams 'Hot Rod!'
The graffiti coupe is iconic in that it lit a fire in a lot of people and got people thinking about Hotrods at a time when the popularity of these cars had suffered.

Don't know where I found this picture but this 5 window looks like a hot rod from one of the "little books" I took to school in my notebook. I like it.

I have never raced at the track but I would like to some day on the 'run what you brung'...just to do what you can't or shouldn't be doing on the highways and biways.

Modern technology really gives you a feel of the energy here for sure.

Always liked this clip since I first saw it.

Its over so fast as opposed to the dry lakes where it goes on for several minutes...both must be wild for the excitement level...

I'd be quite happy with taking this fellows place for a day or two as long as it was to cruise around in this Hotrod...

Both of these cars do it for me.
They're both so tough and raw looking, they just kinda scream the words hot rod at first glance, and at every glance after that.

Well, I posted the one on my mind the other morning, but this is the "forever" hot rod in my mind.

  18. American Graffiti, Millner car.
Reason #1..... Everything else in the movie was a pale shadow by comparison.
Reason #2..... "Fastest thing in the Valley, Man!"

Yea, I know..... it's just a movie prop and there are a lot of very nice mentions here. But people will line up around the block just to buy a ticket to look at it and/or take their photo next to it.

But you have to ask yourself, is it better than Darryl Starbird's Superfleck Moonbird?

I don't get out much but I did snoop around to see what the comment was in reference to...and thanks to Youtube I get it. I have to agree with Shifty there...the Deuce certainly inspired me in my whippersnapper years even to the point of having a poster of it on my wall...

I missed a lot due to my timing of planet presence...;)
So this was pretty cool Hotrod to me...
Man the ole shell isn't over the cowl on this one
    thats for sure...

Maybe a list of things on a car that don't allow it to qualify as a hot rod.
Then we go back to that taboo subject of what makes a hot rod or definition, which usually does not get too far before it causes an argument or gets shut down.
A limited year range would be my first consideration, followed by high preference toward flathead powered stuff, no automatics, some of the rear tires of pic's posted would kill any qualification IMHO.
Car must be street able with a color that fits and possibly some history.
Start ticking the boxes and eventually it becomes obvious which vehicles really qualify as hot rod as per some kind of definition.
Customizing over done also may be considered unhelpful...
My choice would be the McGee 1932 Roadster, the American Graffiti coupe and possibly that Beach Boys blue deuce coupe I saw in a museum last year in MI.
Definitely difficult to come up with only one, but maybe one for each year or similar!

Black with flames, chopped 32 ford with a blown v8 , No fenders and a 4 speed. This is the recipe for a hot rod. IMG_1030.JPG

Don't want to start a piss'n match and don't take this personal but the mention of that "piss yellow" thing in the same sentence as the McGee roadster is akin to sacrilege.

If you built it and it makes you smile when you drive it then its a hot rod!
