He was always a "leader" never a follower..I remember back in the early early 60s,he came down to GreenValley in Texas and was towing with an old Chev carryall...next meet at GreenValley,there must have been 8 or ten guys showed up using old Chev carryalls....maybe his influence???Hahahaha

A good friend of mine, Larry Barnett from Lexington,KY, was pretty good friends with Big Daddy. Larry was a great builder of street rods and Mopar restoration. His mannerisms when working on a car really resembled watching Don Garlits work. Larry donated a few items to the museum over the years. We lost Larry on 11/4/16, great loss to the hot rod world and a personal connection to Big. I was able to talk to Garlits about Larry at his Mopar show at Ocala about 10 yrs ago.

Happy birthday Big Daddy! I was lucky enough to see him run at the first drag race I attended in 1969. Also saw him win Indy in '78, '84 and '85. The greatest owner, driver, crew chief combo of all time.

 

Happy Birthday to "The Man" ! "Big Daddy" was, and always will be, one of the most amazing Hot Rodders in history !! From start-to-finish...he was "class" all the way !!!

Smart and enterprising Floridian who made a name for himself both winning and advancing designs. Much as we love FEDs, he paved the way to a safer chassis. Paid his dues with his foot.

Next time you're in Florida, check out the Don Garlits museum in Ocala. We went a few years ago and had a great time. Nearby is the headquarters of NPD, stop there and maybe they'll give you a tour of their impressive car collection. It's a part of Florida that stands in stark contrast to Disney World and the beach. Many happy returns Don!

 

I agree, the Museum of Drag Racing is awesome, he has a great MoPar show the first weekend in November too. I have family in nearby Dunnellon, Fl. and visit often. Well worth the time to tour if your in central Fla.

 

He looked real good this weekend when he was interviewed during the last day of the Mecum Florida auction.

 

Simply the greatest, THE GREATEST drag racer to ever go down the quarter mile.
He invented and perfected so much, he was THE GUY that everyone, and I mean EVERYONE followed during the Golden Age.
The best there ever was!
