Thanks for the info guys. I didn't know that the Art Johnson car wasn't the Bo Jones modified. That explains the different tires & headlight location that I was pondering above. Sodas, I looked at Howell's site but beyond a seat back, I didn't see much in the way of comnplete panels. I'd love to start piecing a body together. JH
That is in fact Roy Rockwell's car built at Fosses Hot Rods and cool Cars. The picture was taken at the Mild to Wild show at the Tacoma Dome, I think 2006 or 2007. Mike Smith built most of it when he worked there. Jason Hill Painted it and I fabricated a few parts for it and did the final assembly. It has been narrowed and is a tight squeeze to get into. Roy is selling it but I don't know for how much. If I had the money I would drive the wheels off of it. The fuel tanks are under the floor on each side of the drive shaft with a cross over tube between. Total it holds 5 gallons. The engine trans are out of a Mazda Miata. The intake hade to be shortened to keep it inside the hood. The brakes are early Ford and the wheels are 35 16" rears have been widened.
At $50,000 he is for sure. Nearly every piece on that car is hand fabricated. The doors were the only thing not modified on the body. the frame is box tube and tapered to the front. the parking brake is a hydraulic Mico lock system. Mike had about a year in fabrication on it. the bones have a piece of flat bar slid down inside and plug welded for added strength. I had to swap the leaves out in the rear spring because it was too stiff originally. Front springs are quarter eliptics attached to the front axle through the web. The hood is held on by dzus 1/4 turn fasteners. There is no extra room for anything so everything had to be well thought out for placement.
The rear end is a set of original bells an axles with a Rodsville (maybe a Winters) quick change The single tail light is fitted with the guts of a truck LED light that I added a row of clear LED's to for the tag light. The steering is a Schroeder box with a speed reducer machined and attached directly to it to slow the ratio down to be manageable. The headlight buckets are stock model T with modern bulbs in them. I like the way they look better that the original Bo Jones modified. If you ever get a good look at the original the stands look like an erector set was used to hold them. I like both cars but I like Roys better because it uses a manual trans instead of an automatic. I wish he had stayed with the original plan to use a 2.3 Ford Ranger engine instead of the Mazda. Although the Mazda engine looks cooler with its DOHC and smoothed aluminum cam covers. If it was mine to build I would have 86ed the efi and put four carbs on it, or at least two Webbers. I can't think of anymore details right off the top of my head. My friend fastrnu here on the HAMB and I are about 2/3 done with his modified. We don't like Speedway, China's oldest speed shop so we used original parts as much as possible on our build. Here is a link to it. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/26-7-t-modified-build-all-ford-by-ford.534292/ I also have a 26-27 touring body that has been cut down in length and used for a race car. Between the two of us we have enough parts to build it with a flathead, 39 trans and a shortened torque tube 39 wide five rear end. Using a model A frame and a 35 front axle. Right now I am building my International K series truck. Here is a link to it. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/international-kb-7-chop.989019/
A very rare pic from inside of Ron's hotrod enclave...........the Modified sat next to this for many years, but was sent to Roy's shop several years ago as he actually owned it.........
i recently bought the red modified and would like to know if anyone has any info or old photos of the car I believe it was built in the early 60s ? But not sure it has an iron duke four cylinder Pontiac motor and th350 ,was restored in 89/90 and lived around the try valley area of California as you can see from the pics it is very close to bo,s orange car thanks Carl Sent from my iPad using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I wouldn't know Bo or the car but from what read above it had hair pins on the rear and this photo doesn't show that to me.
That's what happens when you build a very cool car that not many people can fit in. Very nitch market for that car. I would love to own it but still can't afford it at the discounted price.
^^^^^^^^^^^ the Seth Hammond car. His Do Fronty Shell Hill Climb winner is hanging on his office wall. Both he and his wife are in the Bonneville 300MPH Club (not in that car). Bob
Howdy Carl P! I know that car! It wasn't built in the sixties though... It was built here in Phoenix in the mid eighties, by Amis Webster, and finished by my buddy Ron Olmstead. He drove it a bit in the late eighties, and sold it at L.A.R.S. in about '90 or so. By the mid nineties, it resurfaced on the pages of American Rodder magazine, with some kinda weird stuff like brush painted suspension components and such. I haven't seen it since the late nineties, so I can't tell where it's been hiding since...
The red modified looks like one featured in "American Rodder Magazine"....don't remember what issue though.
As long as we are doing some crass commercialism for a couple of these cars for sale, I have been pimping my buddy MODIFIED's cute little modified in the cars for sale pages for a couple of weeks. It's needs a new home, has a pretty good pedigree in that it was originally put together by Dave Gale, who was a later master of this style. Hell for that matter, mine is up for sale as well, as soon as I have some time to build and latch the hood top and belly pans. It'll need a bit to drive, but has a new rebuilt 2.3 Ford and C/3 combo.... Giant buddy Jim not included, but illustrates that laid out well, even a 6' 300lbs'er can fit well.
hay thanks for the info the car is now in england and i am looking forward to the summer so i can drive the tyres off it lol if you remember what month year?? american rodder that would be great and again thanks
This car was originally built about 1972 by Dave Gale of Columbus, Ohio! I know that as a fact! Sent from my SM-N900V using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Back in 1995 I was in LA for a school. Went to a hotrod usedcar lot. All indoors. The Modifided and the T sedan Were for sale as a pair. I think about 25K at the time.
