Hey Rob, (IT IS A SAD THING TO FIND OUT ABOUT AN OLD DRAG RACING FRIEND...)
This past summer, I was in a conversation with Ted and exchanged several bits of information. I have always admired his Willys Gasser Pickup. While I was going through my drawings, I found the following Willys Pickup that I had drawn in 1961. It was right during the recovery stage for my brother, after the explosion and fire of our C/Gas Willys Coupe. As noted in the Friday Art Thread back in November of 2016. It was a coincidence that one of the ideas for our next car was going to be an A/Gas 40 Willys Pickup with a 671 SBC.
Here is what I sent to Ted in August of 2016.
    Hey Ted,

Today, I was reading stuff about the ADM in El Segundo. I came across your Willys truck in a photo array from the ADM. upload_2017-1-7_5-19-22.png Look what I found in my drawing book from back in 1961. upload_2017-1-7_5-20-33.png
I was projecting what our next step would have been if our 40 Willys Coupe had not blown up at Lions in 1960. A high school student with time between homework assignments. What a small world.

    Thanks,

    Junji Nakamura

I sent Ted some of my films back then. He was a guest speaker at the ADM for that 2016 event. The ADM had films that I had put together for the "Gassers" event. Did someone go to this past August, summer event?

    Adios, my friend...

This is a blurry picture from the November 11 1955 issue of Drag News...I wonder if this is the first Hilborn injector for blowers on top of Yates engine? I don't recall an earlier version of what is now standard. Now the claim of 435hp? Well, maybe?? I assume the car is the Mikkleson Brothers dragster that also ran an Ardun and set a claimed e.t. record of around 9.35 in the same year.

  9. Junji, nice to see I wasn't the only one! I did this when we had a substitute teacher in drafting class.

The one thing I never understood about the fenders on the vette , they did not even roll the edges just cut the out and run it ' Saber Saw City '

    Dean,
Nice between the lines lettering. I remember having to draw those lines first before lettering anything in those drafting classes. Nothing resembles those classes in the present day middle or high school. That is too bad. Wow, that is an absolutely fabulous drawing... I like the slanting letters. Are you left handed? My son, who is left handed, drew letters in the same angle slant.

Just an image I found on the web.
Good to see it being saved.

  17. I'm right handed Junji. 3 years of drafting helped me later in the machine shop when a customer would bring in a part and say "I need 1000 just like this".

LOL hated the mandatory drafting classes until I wanted my tool and die maker father to make me a mounting plate for the mini bikes I was building at age 11. It sure gave me the motivation to pay attention when he made them EXACTLY to my drawings and there were several Oh Shit tries until I got them right.

No ID - typical pit-shot at Cordova in the "good ole days".

I'd love to see this car at Pebble Beach. Do a great job if you get to it.
