  4. I'm almost 62 and will see how it falls out, collecting earlier vs later. A quick simultaneous equation should do it. I'm in some good earning years right now, hard to walk away from that unless I had no better of a choice.

The best way for me to go is disability, which is possible if my back gets worse. The difference between that right now at 61 and SS at age 66 2/3 is only $40/month. Put my pensions on top of that and the whole dealie gets sexy in a hurry.

bobss396, I've seen some advice to take Social Security at the earliest opportunity.

  8. when I turned 62 I figured the money I got till 65 10 months then ran it out till break even was 79 years
you youngsters will take even longer. 79 is coming fast (I'm only getting about 3 month a year it seems) I sure recommend getting it as soon as you can and spend every dime

I wanted to work full time till 66, but I became unemployed during the recession at 61 !! Nobody wanted to hire an old fart full time so I worked part time till 62 and started collecting SS still working part time. I figured if I live till 80, I the total is the same as waiting for the larger SS check. If I live longer, I still get the lower amount.

  17. 65. After major back surgery, I also did the math and realized I wouldn't break even until I was 79! Plus I collect a stipulation for my two young boys ages 6 and 9. (Does not come from or affect their future Social Security.) My darling wife, (20 years younger than me!) makes enough to keep the wolves from the door...

  18. Still crunching the numbers... originally I was going to retire in 2020, now I got 2 guys in the group going out in 2019 and I'm not crazy about being the bag man for the group. We were acquired by a bigger company 2 years ago and there is a youth movement going on. We hear rumblings of an old fart buyout, but no official word yet. The last one 4 years ago was decent and we had 70 takers.

65 and still turning wrenches for a living. Building flatheads, hotrods, smoking cigars, and drinking beer on my time. [not necessarily in that order]

My Dad raced there every Friday night late mid 1950’s to early 1960’s. He owned Facompre Service Station on Merrick Rd in Valley Stream where he worked on his 3 cars.

I'm 66, look 46, act 26, and my wife hates me for ALL of that!!! It's never a good thing when the waitress asks YOU what your MOTHER would like to eat when you're out to dinner with your WIFE (it's NOT my fault, honest honey!)! If it were't for my rotten spine, and nine spinal surgeries, NOTHING would/could hold me back. 32 years as an X-Ray/CAT Scan Tech beat my spine up. There's a lot of lifting, pulling, pushing, turning, twisting, and walking involved that you have very little control over; not having control is what gets you hurt, and an early retirement. Now I get SS, and a State Disability Pension, for the rest of my life, and if I go to that great wrecking yard in the sky before my wife, then she gets it till she's gone. Still, I'd rather be working the job I loved, and was really good at. As far as this hobby goes, you can have my wrenches when you pry them from my cold, dead, rigored hands. I am Butch/56sedeandelivery.
