I feel obligated to show this one. Learned a bit about Paxton/McCulloch Superchargers from this one too.

I used to hang out at a ''slot car club'' in Medford, Ore (when my mom went grocery shopping and we got to go to the city)....in the 60's...so much fun, and you could bring your own cars and race other kids....it was a VERY BIG DEAL to us 10-15 yr. old kids ...slot cars....that was the big time!:D SCAN0391-2.jpg

    Hello,
Does anyone have this issue of Popular Hot Rodding? I lost my copy of the mag. I have been looking for the story on my late, friend, Atts Ono. His immaculate 40 Willys is on the cover and an inside story.
Please let me know, ASAP. I just missed an Ebay listing for the mag. Thanks...

Wish I would have hung onto my comics as a kid....might be worth a bit more than the 10-12 cents I paid each for them....ah wello_O 0.jpg

I never had a kart as a kid but I did have a minibike with a Mac 10 kart engine, boy that thing was a rocket. I did race shifterkarts in the 80's after I "grew up" but drag racing got in the way first.

  18. I really loved the artwork on all the old hot rod comic books, still have a lot of them.
The 2 comics you posted oddly never got past the first issue.

That's interesting about only 1 issue!.... that artwork is very well done for a comic book! I had boxes of comics growing up, but I got grounded for a month when I was 12-13....I remember punishment was 'super' cleaning my bedroom and the garage, and somehow my boxes of hoarded comics got thrown out with the trash in the process....think my little sister had something to do with it now that I think about it!....That's cool you still got yours!....it was fun collecting them when I was a potential super-hero myself with an old leather football helmet and BATMAN cape that actually fit me!!!:D

Hop Up magazine grew from "little pages" size to full size around '54, spun off Rod & Custom in small format, and then changed to "Hop Up and Motor Life", and finally just "Motor Life". As R&C became a successful hot rod title, Motor Life became more like Motor Trend as a general interest automotive magazine.

Thanks for the interesting information!....I had no clue that "Motor Life" was affiliated with "Hop Up" at one time! ;)

Speed Age was the first magazine dedicated to the culture of speed. The first issue was May 1947 and preceded the second such mag HOT ROD which started in 1948. This issue December 1955 covered the second annual World Series of Drag Racing, NASCAR Champion Tim Flock, Indy 500 winner Bob Sweikert, who also won the AAA Championship, boat racing, the Championship battle between Joe Leonard and Paul Goldsmith, no not NASCAR, they were still racing motorcycles in 1955, a feature on Bobby Myers, NASCAR's Sportsman Champion, to name a few items. It ceased operations over 40 years ago.

I've had these four magazines for over 40 years now, filled with pre 1941 racing photos. I can't look at them without thinking about everyone that served in WWII. Bob DSCF5972.JPG DSCF5974.JPG DSCF5973.JPG DSCF5975.JPG

I display a copy of this cover with 56 at shows. Only car on the cover of Mad Magazine. Brings a chuckle to most.
