What a simple solution to a common problem. Just the other night I was welding under bright light, but on a corner of the project that was in a shadow, wishing I could fix it. Here's my solution!

Hot glue a piece of tin to helmet, then Harbor Freight mag light will stick to it. Lot's of great ideas here.

    Hello SJ,

What a great idea. Back in the high school metal shop class, most people learned gas welding and those goggles at least had less darkness than the arc welding flip lids. If we had these lights back then, we probably would have stayed in those welding classes. It would have made the beads a lot better and smoother. That was one thing I did not like was the visibility of the object being welded when the flip lids came down. The arc welding beads just did not come out like they should. In gas welding, these lights or some other lights could have also been used (there weren't any or no one was inventive enough to experiment), but our beads/welds were pretty good. I give “Kudos” to those who make smooth uniform beads from the modern day welders. It still is a technique to be mastered.

Great Idea! Gonna steal this one! Now I just need to get another auto darkening helmet, my last one petered out and won't lighten up anymore. New battery didn't help, must have dropped it on the concrete floor one time too many.

I use this rig when I'm welding under a vehicle in tight dark areas. Cheap harbor freight led (free) couple hose clamps and short piece of metal.

On the 'glasses' side,I've got a Lincoln helmet that takes their lenses that match your glasses' Helmet wasn't the cheapest (one of the 'Chip Foose' editions), but the lenses are cheap, and if your eyes get worse, you can slide out the old lense and slide in a new one. Improved my TIGing no end.

I got one of those headband led lights and put it around my helmet. Works pretty good.

^^X2---Reminds me I got to go to the welding supply shop and buy me something for x mas..Dog likes to visit too..I put one of the HF forehead light on my helmet when I read the first post..Real quick and dirty screwed a 90° piece of sheet metal to hood above the lens, stuck the light on and adjusted sheet metal angle to suit focal point of weld..Shazam!!

I missed this thread the first time around but am for sure going to put one on my helmet.
I have worn bifocals for 30 years and am going to get a pair of glasses with just the close vision lens aka reading glasses to use too. That should help with the tilt the head to see better thing.

Hmm, I use a clip on light that goes on a hat bill when Im under the car. Bet I could clip it to the edge of my helmet.

When I was still working I used single-vision prescription safety glasses for welding, now that I
have retired I use "drugstore" reading glasses in the right power to suit me.... works very well........

I have had a freebie harbor freight light velcroed to my welding helmet for 2 years now.
That way if I want to remove it no problem. Makes floor pan or roll cage welding much easier.

  29. wonder if you could attach a metal mirror to the helmet so when you start welding the light from welding reflects back onto the work to help you see better? Might save some batteries. :)

when the manufacturers start building them in, the batts will charge with the weld like the lenses do...
