Dean, I've read this many times, I've never seen either race in person but this sounds like something Pete Robinson would do to save weight.

I believe the front wing on the Surfers car was either Walnut or Mahogany and not clear plexy

  18. Tom Jobe was the son of Bill Jobe, a fine machinist, and the foreman of the first machine shop my Dad worked in when he came to California in 1939. Just like his dad, Tom was a perfectionist that knew the simpler the machinery, the more trouble free it ran. Tom didn't run an idler pulley because he didn't think his engines needed one, and he used his dad's shop to machine his own blowers, and shave, or shim them for correct tension. Tom has said no idler, one less thing to maintain. The Surfers always used the KISS method for their racing.

The whole 'Surfer thing' is just fascinating. From 6-cylinder push/tow cars, 90-100%, no money, used parts and no idler pulley. I think it took about 3 guys to put a blower back on the engine. The You Tube videos about them from about the last year or so are about the most well done (simple) I've ever seen. Watched each one about 10 times. The planets were definitely lined up when those three great talents hooked up at that time.

Looks like the Texas "Shark" car before paint (initially purple and then yellow). I thought that the photo might have been from Green Valley Raceway but the tower is on the wrong side (although the graphics are close).

Near lane is Ron Colson in his first dragster, a Garlits chassis unit running AA/GD.

Looks like a AA/GD due to the four port Hilborn, chrome headers, narrow wheels etc. Thought that it might be the Gas House Gang due to the bit of lettering showing but the body and paint do not match any images that I found.

Photo looks like Albuquerque Dragway. Near side is the ABQ racer Bob Pavioni. Far side is the well known Smothers Brothers car with, probably, Dwight Salisbury in the seat. People who have been in ABQ longer than me can provide more information as to whether this was a match race or elimination round. It's a neat photo because it is color. I've seen a lot of pics of Pavioni's car but most of them are black and white.
