I'm getting close to filling the roof on my 5 window coupe project. Does anybody know of a late model car roof or trunk lid that works as a good donor filler? I know I can get a Walden insert but I'm waay too cheap. Thanks guys.
Volvo s70 or v70. Big expanse of smooth steel. No stupid ribs that some folks think are cool but make me throw up. Cheap plentiful. I have one and it was parked next to my 34 for a while. It almost lost its roof a couple times.
^^^ as my grand dad said if everybody liked the same thing it would be one hell of a long line. i like the taurus roof also
I'll check the Taurus roof, there should be plenty of those at the yards. I'd do the fabric roof but it's not really an option with my car.
When did the manufacturers start using the high strength steel that everybody says is hard to weld? If somebody could answer that, we'd know that we need to find donors older than that.
The last one I helped fill a top in a 5 window we used a 1966 Mustang turned sideways it fit the crown perfectly. HRP
I know my Dad told me they had done one in the 70's with a 67-68 mustang roof turned around backwards and it fit the crown perfect.
So a buddy of mine filled the roof of his 29 5 window with a roof off a S-10 blazer. This is not his car but the only shot of a blazer roof I could rip off the inter pages It does have some groovy ridges in it and looks pretty cool welded into the 5 window. Plus, as an added benefit, there seems to be a lot of these S-10's out there missing their 5 speeds so prices may be cheap on what's left over.

I did a 32 5 window years ago with the roof off a Corvair coupe turned backwards. Worked great, had all the right contours and welded right in. Doubt if you'll ever find a Corvair these days.
I used a 59 Chevy hard top. Bought it at a ptown swap. Man that friggen top was big, had a camper shell on my pickup whacked some of the posts off with a hacksaw. Took awhile
I used a Pinto/Bobcat wagon roof. Turned it sideways. Try to find one without a roof rack (no extra holes).
Shoebox Ford turned sideways. Crown fit perfectly after some trimming on the edges Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G891A using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Escort seems to fit the bill also , my 32 3w is a 53 Stupidbaker best as I can recall . Sorry for the Stuip comment , I got carried away again ! Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Do you think it would be much more difficult to roll one out on an English Wheel than tracking down a donor this close to snow season? I know a big, low crown panel is tough to get just right though.
68 full size Chevy 4-dr HT fit all the curves perfect on my 30 coupe. Just tack welded it around the nail area on the original roof, sealed the seam and covered with 1/8" closed cell foam and roof deck vinyl with repro trim. Looks like original with no flapping and no leaking. Could be returned to original if you really wanted. Canuck
